Is Nudity in Video Games Important to the Narrative?

The one thing I have noticed when it comes to stereotypes in videogames, is having multiple women showing way too much skin. I understand that they are trying to appeal to the male audiences, but seeing the “jiggly physics” can become annoying over time.

Like why do women in Sci — Fi games wear only a bra and undies in outer space with a gun holster? Why not wear a suit or something? There was a Sci — Fi game I recently discovered, where the main character literally wears a bikini, while fighting aliens on another planet.

I guess…she wanted to look cute for a day?

Who knows?

But I really can’t criticize this kind of add on to video games anymore, because if you think about it…it is kind of a genius marketing move.

A YouTuber I recently have been watching admitted it himself, getting to play the character of a beautiful woman who isn’t afraid to show off her body is awesome. Even though the inclusion of women showing too much skin isn’t needed for a video game that already has a great story, it does play a part in the narrative somehow.

One great example I know of is a video game called, Onechanbara

This franchise is about women who take on hordes of zombies to protect the world. And they are always showing too much skin.

However, there is a good explanation for this.

The women you play in the games explain to the player that they need to expose as much skin as they possibly can. They are special zombie hunters that absorb the blood of the dead when they fight. If they receive enough blood, they can become even stronger over time. And in order to do that, the blood must touch every inch of their skin.

This made so much sense, and I honestly loved this horror concept a lot!

This is one of the few video games that gets a huge pass, because the inclusion of nudity in this game is important to the narrative. When you play the game, you can actually see them absorb the blood as they fight, leading to their power level rising when they go against boss fights.

Another great example is a character named Maria from Silent Hill 2.

Silent Hill 2 is I believe one of the greatest horror games ever made. One specific character the player runs into is a woman named Maria. You will meet her in a town called Silent Hill, where the world can change from a fog like environment, to a place of madness and monsters.

Maria’s character is used as a tool to lure the main character to his own doom. She is portrayed as quite the attractive woman, wearing a promiscuous outfit, and you can tell that the main character is struggling to control himself around her.

She is like a succubus who is there to make sure that the protagonist will somehow meet a bitter end, but as the player, you can go against Maria and escape the town that is using this beautiful woman to make sure you will lose in the end.

Maria really does play in the narrative so damn well, and I love how the game does not hesitate to freak the player out with her character. She comes off so sweet in some scenes, and slowly shows her true, evil colors when the protagonist is in a vulnerable position.

So, can nudity work in a video game if it plays into the narrative somehow?

Yes. I believe it can.

Even though I am a little mixed on the use of nudity in video games, if the creators use these games to play their cards right, they can actually surprise me and make me forget why the character I play has a chest that is jiggling constantly.

No seriously, it gets so annoying after playing sexy female characters for a while lol.
