A Labyrinth Sequel is in Development???

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read this headline on a random article. I started to do more research, believing that this was fake news, but it turns out to be true. And I was more shocked to see who is going to be the director of the Labyrinth sequel.
Robert Eggers, the director who created The Witch, The Northman, The Lighthouse, and the recent remake of Nosferatu that was released last year. I’m sure Eggers is going to do a fantastic job, but I do have a lot of doubts about this news.
My biggest question is: How can they replace David Bowie?
David Bowie was absolutely amazing when it came to the role of the Goblin King, Jareth. He barely had any screen time, but his presence was so powerful, that it felt like he was in the entire movie.

And let’s not forget that his singing voice was fantastic for the character as well.
He will be greatly missed, and he left a memorable performance behind as the Goblin King, that fans will always remember and love him for.
And what’s crazy is that this project has been in development for a decade.
Sometimes this could mean a bad sign, but since it was given to Eggers now, there is hope for the sequel to have a chance at being good. I do hope that the film does play with the horror themes more, and the writers better stick to the practical effects of the goblins, cause CGI ain’t going to work.
I think it would be cool if Jareth had a kid or something, and this kid is now the ruler of this world. And what if Sarah’s little brother from the first movie happened to stumble upon this world next, running into the new ruler of the goblins?
This is my idea of a sequel, but whatever is done for the sequel, I know that Eggers could make it work. At least we already know right off the bat that this won’t be a cash grab, because Eggers knows how to make a damn good movie.
And I’m so glad it’s not a remake, because I’m not sure how that would have worked.
How do you fans feel about this announcement? Are you excited or do you think Labyrinth should have remained a standalone film?
