Speak No Evil is a Dreadful Tale of Evil Taking Advantage of the Innocent

I did mention in the past that I would make sure to watch the original Speak No Evil before watching the remake. I actually regret watching the original, because I felt so broken after watching the film.

Speak No Evil 2022 follows the story of Bjorn, his wife, Louise, and their daughter, Agnes. During a trip, they run into a ‘friendly family,’ who ask them to come visit them during the summer.

The couple decides to visit, instantly regretting their decision as time goes on during the weekend. The other family is quite strange, the couple, Patrick and Karin are downright weird, while their son never speaks.

What follows is a cycle of endless mistakes, that lead to one of the most disturbing endings I have ever seen in a horror film.

Bjorn and his family are aware that Patrick and Karin are strange, yet they make the mistake of continuing to stay with them.

Bjorn and Louise know that the other family is way too freaking weird, but they decide to stay with them. They keep wanting to leave or they actually leave, only to come back to stay with them.

Why?

Well, Bjorn and Louise are the kind of couple that are too afraid to be mean.

They don’t appear to have any kind of aggressive bone in their body, even though they do get angry with the couple sometimes, they ignore all of the red flags.

There is one scene where they share their own frustrations with the couple, only to end up feeling bad about hurting Patrick and Karin’s feelings.

It’s a frustrating experience as a viewer, but the director makes it obvious that Bjorn and Louise would rather remain in blissful ignorance than confront the problem.

If only they had the guts to stand up, then perhaps the dark ending could have been avoided.

Bjorn discovers that Patrick and Karin are serial killers who murder couples and take their children to raise as their own.

This was actually a pretty surprising twist in the film for me. I assumed that Patrick and Karin were just crazy, and were slowly torturing their son, but it turned out, they were far worse than I thought.

Bjorn decides to venture outside to investigate a barn owned by the couple. He discovers a grisly site, pictures of families they had murdered, including children they had kidnapped and raised as their own.

Then he finds the body of their son, a boy that never belonged to them.

Bjorn panics and decides to get his family out of there. He takes the car with Louise and Agnes, only to realize that there is barely any gas left.

You would think that Bjorn would tell Louise about what he found, right?

No.

He doesn’t say anything.

Why???

Perhaps he was afraid of scaring his family? But…they were serial killers. Why would you keep something so insane to yourself?

If you’re feeling confused at this point, there is a reason why Bjorn never says anything. The dark ending will reveal all the answers, trust me.

Bjorn and Louise are kidnapped by the couple, and are forced to watch Agnes get taken away from them while she gets tortured at the same time.

This part of the film is freaking insane.

Bjorn and Louise are held back by the serial killer couple as they call for their assistant to help them kidnap Agnes.

They torture her in front of her parents, I won’t say how, because it broke me, and I didn’t think they were going to show the damn scene.

I was hugging a teddy bear to my chest as I looked away from the screen. I felt my body literally deflate during that entire scene. I couldn’t stand Louise and Bjorn’s reactions and the cries of Agnes through her pain.

This whole scene is pure horror at its finest, and it's horrible to watch a mother and father watch their child get taken in such an evil way.

You would assume that Louise and Bjorn would fight back, right?

Wrong.

They don't do anything.

Bjorn and Louise come to the realization that the serial killer couple purposely target weak families as their victims.

By this point in the film, Bjorn and Louise are defeated. They lost their daughter and will never see her again.

Bjorn then asks Patrick and Karin why they are doing this to them. Patrick tells Bjorn:

"Because you let me."

That single statement said it all.

Since Bjorn and Louise were too afraid to fight back, or to attempt and save their own daughter, they paid the price for being so naive and weak.

Bjorn and Louise are both killed, and the film ends with Agnes now pretending to the daughter of Patrick and Karin.

It is hinted they are targeting another family, and Agnes will die next, to be replaced with another child.

Isn’t that so messed up?

This evil couple is aware of the people they target, they go after the weak, to continue their endless cycle of pain.

Like the title of the movie suggests, if Bjorn or Louise hadn’t ignored the red flags, perhaps they could have saved their family.
