Bates Motel is the Perfect Horror TV Show
I remember how awesome this show was the first time I watched it back in 2018. I had started college for the first time, and when I had some free time to spare, I would immediately go back to watching this show. I knew that Bates Motel was great, and the hype was definitely 100% deserved.
We follow the story of Norman Bates, and his mother, Norma, who are looking for a new start in life. They move to a small town, where they decide to purchase a hotel. Everything goes down the drain once they arrive to the town, and the duo find themselves trying to cover up a murder. This act leads down a spiral of madness for both Norman, as he attempts to control the dangerous murderous tendencies within him.
He starts to believe that his own mother is behind all of his own murders, and he develops an unhealthy obsession with her that is beyond disturbing. Norma is aware of his bad side, but she is willing to do whatever it takes to protect him, even if there is possibly a monster inside of him.
You will feel so bad for the other main characters that are introduced to the show, as they slowly come to realize that something is deeply wrong with Norman Bates.
This show is almost like watching the original Alfred Hitchcock film. It's a mix of crime, drama, horror, and utter insanity. It's incredibly interesting to follow the point of view of so many characters in this show. We get a sneak peek through their eyes, including Norman and Norma.
And these two are such complicated and tragic characters.
They had both experienced brutal trauma before arriving to the town, and they ended up bringing their insanity with them. It sucks that the other characters in the show find themselves thrown into the worst situations when it comes to this strange mother and son duo.
And I have never felt so creeped out with a character like this.
Norman's obsession with his mother is borderline unhinged. He starts to hallucinate seeing her wherever she goes, and he literally becomes Norma herself, killing anyone that would dare to stand in the way of him and his mother's lives. The kills are so brutal in this show, and it's so terrifying to think that Norma literally BLACKS OUT as these murders take place.
He never remembers a single murder, because he truly believes that Norma is the real villain. And it's so creepy that even though he does believe this scenario, he is willing to protect her at all costs. He is even willing to go against the multiple men that Norma dates, just because he is jealous of sharing her with someone else.
Norman is hands down one of the most evil villains in a television show.
I will never forget the anticipation I felt when the other characters started to figure out the dark truth. I started to feel so scared, wondering what he had in store for people that cared about him.
This show is fantastic and gets better with every single season. The finale to this show is one of my absolute favorites, and I couldn't think of a better ending for a great show like this. It's a huge shame how underrated this show is.
And yes, American Horror Story did deliver some great seasons for the horror genre, but Bates Motel definitely deserves a spot in the top 5 best horror shows of all time. Every single actor in this show is awesome in their roles, especially the actors who played Norman and Norma Bates.
Seriously, these two each did a phenomenal job with their roles!
