28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is Diabolical Madness

I was beyond thrilled to finally watch 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, and I think this is going to be one of the best horror movies of 2026. Hell, it already deserves the title of horror movie of the year, but we still got even more horror movies in store for the rest of the year!

The Bone Temple is everything you want in a horror movie, and it’s one of the best experiences I have had with a horror film in a theater. I had watched the film in XD, and I was not expecting the film to be so freaking loud. It definitely added to the experience, and damn, I was both disgusted and shocked with the events that take place in the sequel!

We are introduced to another reign of terror, that ends with a powerful sign of hope, that perhaps suggests that humanity is indeed not too far gone.

WARNING: I don’t normally give out spoiler warnings, but in this case, I’m going to issue one. This film deserves to be seen by all horror fans, and the ending revealed a shocking twist I DID NOT SEE COMING!

The story begins with Spike finding himself stuck with an evil cult, that is led by a man named Jimmy.

After the first events of the reboot of 28 Years Later, we cut right back to Spike’s story, as he tries to navigate his new life with a cult. This group is led by a monster named Jimmy, who is one of the most vile villains I have seen in a horror movie. He forces Spike to fight to the death, killing one of his own members of the cult, and then Spike becomes part of their group.

Poor Spike is forced to stick with them, in fear that they will target him next. While Spike is fearful of his companionship, Dr. Kelson from the last film, appears happy with his company, despite living in complete solitude. He befriends an Alpha, one of the strongest zombies that was created from the virus. He uses drugs to immobilize him, to study the Alpha that he names Samson, while also spending time with the creature, seeking any sort of human interaction.

We then cut back to Spike, who falls into another level of total terror. Jimmy and the cult stumble upon a random group of people, that are subjected to pure torture. The entire group is captured, and only one of the people escape, who is a pregnant woman. The cult proceeds to skin alive the people they capture, a gut-wrenching scene that was difficult to watch.

And what’s worse, is that the pregnant woman is forced to watch this from her hiding spot, as she hides from the cult inside of the barn. Spike runs outside to avoid watching this horrific torture, and one of the cult members spends time with him, revealing that she still has some humanity left in her.

Jimmy and the group experience their first sense of ‘loss’ when their captives fight back.

One of the people is spared from this torture, and Jimmy offers this stranger a chance to live, if he challenges one of his cult members, like Spike did. The man agrees to fight what he thought would be a weak member, but she defeats him. Before she can begin her torture upon him, the pregnant woman fights back, throwing a hook against her head. The cult member gets impaled, and then the man fights back too, setting a cult member on fire.

Jimmy gets pissed off, ordering Spike to hunt the pregnant woman, and to bring her back to him alive. Spike refuses to harm her, and instead asks if she will take him away from the cult, saving his life. She refuses, and runs away, leaving Spike behind. He returns to an angry Jimmy that is wanting to torture him next after the two people they lost, but the same cult member that comforted Spike steps in to protect him.

She reveals to Jimmy that she had seen his father, that he believes is Satan. She mistakes Dr. Kelson for being the devil, and Jimmy agrees to go meet with him, sparing Spike.

They set out on their journey to go meet up with Dr. Kelson, who they believe is the Devil.

Before he runs into Jimmy’s group, Dr. Kelson is busy experimenting with Samson, determined to study the virus. He finally makes an insane breakthrough, when Samson suddenly speaks. Dr. Kelson is astonished by this revelation, and he appears happy, expressing a genuine smile. He runs into Jimmy the next day, and he tells Jimmy that he is indeed not the Devil. Jimmy accepts this disappointment, and stays with Dr. Kelson, talking with him about his interests in Satan, and even about his past life.

He makes a deal with Dr. Kelson, telling him that he wants to manipulate his cult into thinking that he is Satan, and if the doctor doesn’t comply, he will die. Dr. Kelson agrees, and Jimmy goes back to the group to let them know about his discovery. The cult is ecstatic to meet Satan, and they all get a good night’s sleep for the exciting day. Meanwhile, Dr. Kelson decides to try out one more thing with Samson, to see if he can somehow bring his humanity back, knowing that he will never see his friend again.

Samson is given medication from the doctor, and during the next day, he suddenly remembers his past life as a human. He snaps out of his zombie like state, and is shocked to find the dead are watching him, now seeing him as a threat. Samson fights back, and he continues to battle as the dead swarm him.

We then cut back to Spike, who is attempting to escape from the cult. He is ambushed by one of the cult members, but he is saved by his new friend. She lies to Jimmy that she had no choice to kill their comrade, due to his fear of meeting with the Devil. Jimmy buys the story, and he leads his cult to meet up with Dr. Kelson.

Dr. Kelson prepares for this interaction, getting ready to pretend to be the Devil. He decorates his home to resemble something evil, and later on that night, he meets the cult.

After putting on an awesome show for the cult, making them believe that they are actually meeting the Devil, he makes a shocking discovery. While he is giving out false orders for Jimmy and his cult to continue their torture upon other future victims, Dr. Kelson realizes that Spike is one of the cult members.

He comes up with a plan, to convince the cult to kill Jimmy, to offer him as a sacrifice for Satan. Jimmy freaks out over this, and stabs Dr. Kelson. The cult goes crazy after this, and Spike’s friend kills the other two cult members, getting ready to attack Jimmy. Spike stabs Jimmy first, and his friend knocks out Jimmy, putting him down.

Spike runs over to Dr. Kelson, who is now dying from his wound. Spike’s friend realizes that she was fooled into thinking that Dr. Kelson was the Devil, and expresses emotion over Spike and Dr. Kelson knowing each other. She offers to further torture Jimmy, as punishment for what he did to the doctor, and many others.

Spike’s friend introduces herself as Kelly, her real name, and the two of them leave the bone temple. Jimmy is crying as the two of them leave, as he had been tortured by Kelly. As he is expressing sorrow over Satan and his past life, Samson appears, and during Jimmy’s mental state, he believes that he is meeting the real Satan. Samson, now appearing to be fully human, thanks Dr. Kelson for bringing back his humanity.

Dr. Kelson dies with a sense of happiness, happy that he was able to cure Samson. His new friend carries his body from the temple, leaving Jimmy calling out to Samson, as a random zombie appears, killing Jimmy offscreen.

The film ends with a shocking character return to the franchise.

We are introduced to a brand new character, a little girl who is talking to a man offscreen. This man is revealed to be Jim, from the very first film of 28 Days Later. While they are having a family moment, his daughter hears something outside. The two of them run out of their cottage, wielding weapons. They find Spike and Kelly trying to escape from the dead.

Jim and his daughter decide to go and help them, ending the film.

My mind literally exploded during the ending. I literally gasped out loud in the theater, because I instantly recognized Cillian Murphy’s voice, who plays Jim from the first film. I was not expecting his character to return, and I was left with so many questions after the film ended.

We didn’t see Hannah, or his girlfriend Selena. I’m so curious as to what happened to his family, because he was all alone with his daughter, that is most likely Selena and Jim’s child.

Also, what is going to happen with Samson, who is now human?

And will Spike ever return to his father?

We were left with a lot of unanswered questions, but damn, this film was INCREDIBLE.

I really hope we get a new film for the franchise, but even if we don’t, we at least got a perfect ending for this sequel, along with a shocking return of a fan favorite character!
