True Crime/Horror Scares Me

While Lovecraft or body horror is considered to be one of the best genres in horror, I think fictional true crime horror deserves to be in the same category. What makes this kind of horror scary, is that these stories can happen in real life. Reality horror is the worst kind, and the thought of monsters living in human skin while blending into our society is horrible to imagine.
One specific show that I have yet to watch, and have heard amazing things about, is the very first season of True Detective. I have heard so many horror fans claim that this is one of the best first season wonders, that is seen as a perfect story.
The one thing that fans have pointed out so many times, is the use of a cult that appears in season one.
I don't remember what the cult is called, but they are depicted as pure evil in the show. Two detectives are determined to catch these monsters, once they learn that this cult hunts women, using them for sick rituals before they kill them.
One of the members is a hillbilly, who made me so uncomfortable the first time I had seen a scene of his character on YouTube. What's worse, is that he comes off so normal. The detectives literally speak to him in one part of the show, as he is cutting grass for a football field with a tractor.
The thought of not realizing that you are interacting with a monster in human disguise is terrifying, and that is one of the reasons why I'm a little scared to watch the first season of True Detective.
Another TV show that does the fictional horror crime trope is the show called Evil.
I have already seen the first two seasons of Evil, and I am beyond impressed by this show. It's original, and it isn't afraid to tackle all kinds of horror. We follow the story of a woman who works with a future priest, and a blue-collar contractor. The three of them explore cases that involve crime and the supernatural. Despite some of the cases having supernatural moments, the fictional true crime is still used in a very unique way.
One case that the first season heavily focuses on is a serial killer who claimed that he was possessed by a demon, making him kill women. The crew eventually discover that he is lying to the trio, and they are able to put him behind bars, only for him to be released later on. Even though we never see his crimes take place, his evil presence is already enough for the story. He was caught lying about his possession, but the thought of this man being married and being able to blend with the world was the scariest part to me.
We also get such a cool villain in the show, who works in the law enforcement field. He works with actual demons, to ensure that corruption will continue in the justice system. His plans are always getting foiled by the crew at some point during the show, forcing him to come up with multiple sick ideas to make sure that his tasks will be completed for the demons he is serving. We also get a hilarious confirmation scene that he was indeed telling the truth, when he is seen seeking therapy with a real demon, telling him about all of his troubles with the trio.
I highly recommend that every horror fan check out Evil, and for those who can stomach the first season of True Detective, please check it out! I'm planning to review True Detective once I get around to watching the one season wonder!
