Deathstalker was released in 2025, and had gained somewhat of a cult following, due to the film being a remake of the original Deathstalker, that was released in 1983. I haven’t seen the original yet, but I think this film is one of the best remakes ever made. The practical effects were top tier; it was like a combination of the Terrifier and the Evil Dead franchise in one movie.
I love how cheesy and dumb the dialogue felt in the movie, the actors did a great job pulling off the feel of an 80s horror movie. The world building was incredible, the monsters that were built for the film were so impressive to look at, I can’t imagine how long it took to pull this movie off!
I wish Hollywood would consider going back to the good old times of filmmaking, independent filmmakers have been dominating this year with the horror genre!
We follow the story of a man named Deathstalker, who is accidentally chosen to battle evil.
Deathstalker finds an powerful amulet on a fallen soldier after a battle with demons, and he realizes that the amulet now has a hold on him, and he must find a way to undo the spell. This amulet belongs to a powerful entity known as Nekromemnon, that will one day return and destroy anyone who stands in his way. Deathstalker battles ruthless enemies, and comes across a wizard named Doo — Dad, who offers to help him. They run into an old foe of Deathstalker’s, named Jotak, who was once an ally to him during battle.
Deathstalker barely wins the battle, and escapes with Doo — Dad. They set out on their journey together again, and come across a woman named Brisbayne, who offers to help them on their journey. They battle enemies left and right, until they are able to finally free Deathstalker from the amulet’s power. They learn that a special sword is the only weapon that can defeat Nekromemnon, and it must be done by a warrior.
Meanwhile, Jotak is now getting a new arm, after Deathstalker had sliced off his arm during their first battle. His leader, a powerful wizard, tells him to take down Deathstalker, once and for all.
Deathstalker and Doo — Dad are betrayed by Brisbayne, who are given up to her leader, known as Grendel.
The duo is captured by Grendel, who wants revenge for Deathstalker not bothering to pay them when he once worked for the bounty hunter group. He refuses to pay them again, and the sentence is death. Brisbayne begs Grendel to spare her comrades, but they go ahead with the execution. However, before the duo is killed, the camp is attacked by swamp monsters. Everyone is brutally killed, minus Deathstalker and Doo — Dad.
Doo — Dad uses a flute that had belonged to Brisbayne, and he plays a tune, telling Deathstalker that they had missed the sound of music. He urges Deathstalker to hug one of the swamp monsters, as a sign of love and peace between them. Deathstalker relectantly obliges, and they are both spared from a grisly fate.
They set off to speak with a prince named Baldur, who had been promised the amulet by Grendel’s group. The reward would be a handsome sum of money, and the duo convince Baldur to give up more money to them as payment for their troubles during the journey. They are tricked by Baldur into giving up the amulet, and not getting paid, until they are stopped by a horde of demons.
The duo escape, only to run into Jotak again, who is now much stronger with his new arm. Deathstalker battles Jotak, and Brisbayne joins the fight, proving that she did have a heart for her comrades. Deathstalker is suddenly killed by Jotak, and the remaining fighters are left heartbroken as they are captured by Jotak and the demons.
Deathstalker comes back from the dead with the help of the swamp people, and he sets off to go and rescue his friends.

Nekromemnon is able to be resurrected, and Brisbayne’s body becomes the vessel for the creature. Jotak is defeated by Deathstalker, and Doo — Dad is able to go head to head with the wizard, winning his own battle. The wizard is killed by the entity, and while he is getting eaten alive by skeleton demons, a miracle happens for Deathstalker.
The special sword appears to Deathstalker, and he uses the sword to take down Nekromemnon for good. He removes one blade from the sword, before plunging the weapon into the monster’s chest. He defeats the creature, and is reunited with Brisbayne. He had removed the one blade to spare her life, and the heroes rejoice after winning the battle.
Doo — Dad and Brisbayne tell Deathstalker that he could now literally become a king after defeating the entity, but he refuses. He asks Doo — Dad to destroy the sword, and the film ends with a hilarious moment between the heroes. Doo — Dad constantly misses every shot to destroy the sword with his spells, and the movie ends with Deathstalker losing his mind and going after Doo — Dad as Brisbayne watches with amusement.
This movie was such an entertaining adventure, and I was so surprised by the practical effects throughout the entire movie. I felt that the designs of the monsters kept getting more and more insane, and I was left even more impressed by the time the film ended. I even found myself laughing in several scenes, because of the characters. Seriously, these actors deserve so much credit for being able to play the perfect 80s characters while delivering stupid one liners!
I hope that we get another movie in the future, hopefully a possible sequel or even a franchise! Deathstalker has so much potential to continue, this dude is like Bruce Campbell stuck fighting demons in a medieval world!
