Backcountry is a Disturbing Film Based on a True Story that Involved a Bear Attack

I never bothered to watch Backcountry, because I’m pretty picky when it comes to the ‘nature horror’ types of movies.

I recently watched this movie yesterday…it destroyed me.

It was not a pleasant watch when it came to the incredible practical effects of the gore scenes…I can handle gore, but this one felt too tragic.

It think it has to do with the fact that this movie is based on a true story.

I did do my research after I finished watching the film, and I was stunned to see how respectful the director was when it came to directing this film. Adam MacDonald is the mastermind behind this film, and he did not want to make it an exact replica of what happened to the couple that was involved in the bear attack in 2005.

A married couple had been attacked by a black bear while they were camping in a park in Canada. They both sustained brutal injuries, and the husband tried his best to save his wife. Tragically, she passed away from her injuries before she could get help.

The husband had to receive 300 stitches for his injuries.

This real event is so damn sad. I felt like crying when I was reading this true story, and I was still trying to heal from that horrible bear attack scene I saw in the film. It felt so freaking real, and I hated every second of it.

I’m so glad to see that Adam did not want to base the film on the couple, he only wanted to create a fictional story for the film.

This is the film he wrote.

Backcountry follows the story of a happy couple who goes on a camping trip.

The couple we follow in this story is named Alex and Jenn. They embark on a camping trip together, and we already see how lovable they are with other.

The film does a fantastic job building up the characters, and I loved the couple. It was obvious they truly loved each other, and it made me worry over what was going to happen to them increase even more.

Alex ends up making several mistakes in the beginning of the film. He refuses to take a map with him, and he even leaves behind Jenn’s phone. He is determined to make their trip special, and he is willing to do everything by himself without any help.

Alex and Jenn end up running into a stranger named Brad, who they offer to stay with them and have a nice meal. Right off the bat, I was so uncomfortable watching this scene.

Something didn’t feel right. The stranger came off way too strong, and he also seemed really pissed off that Alex didn’t trust him. He even offers to take them on a tour of the place that Alex wants to show Jenn, but he refuses. Brad leaves the couple alone, and they finally get some relief.

Then things get so much worse for the couple.

Alex and Jenn realize they are lost.

This part was so dreadful to watch, because you really believed that Alex did know where he was going. Until they reach a particular area, there is only more woods on the other side.

Jenn goes into panic mode, and while she is getting angry at Alex, she learns that he wanted to propose to her in the spot he wanted to take her to. The couple both make up afterwards, and they both confess that they still love each other despite this terrible misfortune.

I was really surprised to see that they were so calm, knowing that they were running out of food and water. Yet, I think their love is what kept them strong.

Which makes me freaking sad, because this next part is absolutely brutal.

I don’t think I have ever felt so uncomfortable watching a bear attack scene in a movie. A bear had been on their scent for a while, and once he spots the couple, he rips straight into their tent.

Alex and Jenn sustain horrible injuries, and while Jenn is trying so hard to calm down Alex from his panic state, the bear comes back.

Alex is dragged off by the bear, and Jenn hears him screaming at her to run for her life…as he is getting mauled to death.

I can’t even share how graphic this attack was through images, because it was extremely gory. So, I’ll just describe it.

Alex’s face gets slashed, and you can see his skin hanging from his jaw, and one of his eyes is bulging out of his eye socket.

Jenn makes a run for it, but in her state of shock, she comes back to retrieve the ring that Alex was going to give to her when he would propose.

What we see next is what is left of Alex, and it’s a gnarly sight.

Alex was torn open, and his insides were eaten. His body is a mangled mess, it’s something out of a straight up nightmare.

Watching Jenn’s reaction to seeing that is what broke me. I kept holding back tears when she was crying from shock. I can’t imagine finding your loved one like that…I have never felt so sorry for a character in a horror movie like that in a long time.

Alex did not deserve a twisted fate that horrible…poor dude suffered before he died.

Jenn is now on her own, struggling to get out of the woods while the bear is hunting her.

I was so tensed up as I watched Jenn try her best to escape the animal that killed her loved one. Jenn is able to climb down a rock wall of a waterfall, and is able to escape from the bear.

Jenn receives a major injury to her ankle in the process, but she is determined to survive, and finds a way to bind her ankle. She continues on foot, utterly exhausted. Jenn eventually breaks down, giving in to the pain of losing Alex.

This part got to me too, this is one of the saddest horror films I have seen.

Jenn continues to navigate the forest, and hope appears when she finds a deer near her. Jenn follows where the creature went, and stumbles upon the boat that her and Alex used to row to the park.

She gets on the boat, and makes it back to the park, where her car is waiting. She collapses from exhaustion when she sees a huge crowd of people talking amongst themselves.

Brad, the stranger they had invited over to have a meal with them, is among this group, and he is the first one to run over to Jenn.

I felt so miserable when the film ended.

Even though I was glad Jenn got to escape, the trauma of what she lost will always remain with her.

Backcountry is a harrowing story that happens in real life, and that is what makes this film terrifying.
