Evil Dead 2 is an Unpredictable, Gory Masterpiece

The first time I saw the sequel to the iconic first Evil Dead film, it was love at first sight. I loved the gore, the practical effects, the use of stop motion, and the characters that struggle to fight for their lives against pure evil.

The story to the sequel is pretty much a re — do of the first film, with a comedy aspect added to the story. The story follows Ash and his girlfriend, Linda, who are going to spend time together in a cabin that doesn’t even belong to them.

Trouble instantly arrives to ruin the couple’s honeymoon, when Ash plays a tape recorder that unleashes evil. Linda is possessed by this evil, and Ash is forced to kill her.

He buries her, and then he attempts to escape, but realizes that the woods isn’t going to let him go.

The evil has plans for him, that lead to nothing but utter chaos.

Ash is psychological and physically tortured by the evil for about 30 minutes of the film.

This sequence is by far my favorite part of the film.

Watching Ash struggle against the evil in both a comedic and scary way was genius directing by the writers.

So many insane things take place at once, that I literally couldn’t even predict just what the hell was going to happen next.

Here is a full list of all the crazy shit that happens:

  1. Ash is forced to fight the undead corpse of Linda.
  2. Ash gets chased by the evil throughout the house.
  3. Ash’s own hand gets possessed, and he is forced to chop it off.
  4. Ash gets the scare of his life when his own reflection reaches out to choke him. (I freaking loved this part. My love for horror utterly adores this scene).
  5. Ash witnesses a rocking chair moving by itself.
  6. The entire cabin starts to laugh at him, and Ash breaks down, laughing along with the cabin. (This scene is intense, but hilarious at the same time).

In other words, a whole lot of bad shit went down for poor Ash.

Then, Ash gets another surprise. Just not in the way that he expected.

Ash teams up with a group of people to help him defeat the evil.

This strange group is led by a woman named Annie, and her parents own the cabin.

Well…they used to.

Unfortunately, Annie learns that her parents were killed by this evil.

While she is breaking down with the realization of everything taking place, everyone freaks out when the evil starts to pick them one by one. The death of every single person who bites the dust was so shocking and unexpected.

I couldn’t believe that Annie’s boyfriend dies first. And damn, does he deliver quite the jump scare in one of the best scenes of the film.

After the group loses another member, Ash and Annie both begin to work together to hopefully take down the evil.

I have to say, their bond was honestly kinda sweet.

They just knew that they had to be brave, and do whatever it takes to survive. I loved how Ash and Annie showed that they did care for each other, especially when he comforts her in one part when she has a breakdown.

Their unlikely friendship was another part of the film that I really liked.

Ash and Annie eventually make it to the end of the fight, where they now must fight the evil now in the form of flesh, revealing itself to the duo. Then they must open a portal to send the evil back for good.

Once Ash and Annie begin their battle, so much insanity is taking place.

A demon version of Annie's mother fights the duo, and they win. Annie is stabbed in the back while reciting a spell to stop the evil, and she literally dies when Ash defeats the evil with his trusty chainsaw.

I loved how he gave her his respects, telling her she did a good job. I was so mad when she died, but it was nice to see that Ash did care for her, even in the end.

Then…something happens. Something really bad.

The film ends with Ash being sent back in time to help an army in the medieval times to fight against the evil.

The major problem with Annie and Ash’s plan was that the portal to send back the evil was left open, taking Ash along with it.

When he arrives to the medieval world, he kills one of the demons to protect the knights from harm. Then the knights praise Ash for saving them, happy that their warrior has finally arrived to help them defeat the evil.

The movie literally ends with Ash helplessly screaming as the knights cheer for their hero.

The first time I saw this ending, I burst out laughing. It was a mix of emotions for me. I felt so bad for Ash getting stuck in that situation, but I couldn’t help but laugh when Ash was having a breakdown.

Like bruh, that sucks. Poor dude was so done after this.

Evil Dead 2 is my favorite film in the franchise. I love the randomness of all of the crazy events that take place, and how everything just kept getting worse and worse. It’s one of those few perfect horror films I can never get tired of!
