The Killing of a Sacred Deer is Freaking Weird

I watched The Killing of a Sacred Deer a long time ago, and this movie still hasn't left the back of my mind. This is the strangest horror movie I saw in the beginning of 2024.

We follow the story of a doctor, his wife, and his two kids. They are a happy family, until a teen named Marvin disrupts their happy lives. He inserts himself into their lives, and the family becomes tormented by his actions.

The daughter grows obsessed with Marvin, the daughter and the son both become paralyzed from the waist down, the wife and the doctor kidnap Marvin...it's an endless cycle of insanity from the looks of it. To add to the weirdness, every single character talks in a monotone voice.

It's like no character in this movie has a single piece of emotion in them.

At first I had assumed it was bad acting in the first couple of minutes, but then I realized that everyone was purposely talking in a robotic way.

This was a genius move on the director, because I felt sort of absorbed into the plot, because I couldn't look away from this strange masterpiece.

The ending is when the movie really gets dark. In order for the unexplainable torment to end, Marvin tells the doctor that he must kill one family member. He spins around holding a shotgun in the living room while his family is tied up. He ends up killing his young son, the only family member that I actually felt really bad for.

He was by far the most innocent one in the family, that was stuck in this craziness.

The movie ends with the remaining family members watching Marvin in a restaurant, as they leave.

I'm curious what that ending meant. Either out of respect for him, or perhaps they were resentful for what he made them do, who really knows?

All I know is that this movie was weird.

But it was oddly entertaining!
