Horror Fans Would Love Gladiator 2
Gladiator 2 was a pretty damn good sequel. I really enjoyed the performances, the medieval world, the fights, and of course, the fantastic violence we got in this film.
I was not expecting the film to be that violent, and wow, did it freak me out.
This movie review is going to be a little different. I’m going to be discussing several cons of the film, and I will also be ranking all of the major deaths as well. The cons are pretty much whatever, but the second reason is…damn.
I will go over the cons first. They are pretty much nitpicking sort of, but I just want to point them out, and I need to get it out of my system lol.
1. I got kind of annoyed with the CGI monkeys and sharks.
I don’t normally point out CGI stuff in films ever, but this one really irritated me. The monkeys and the sharks just looked…kind of fake?
The CGI rhino was fine with me, because it looked pretty good, and we also got two grisly deaths in that one scene, so that worked for me.
However, the monkeys and the sharks…it didn’t feel right to me. I’m at least glad it was pretty short, and at least we got a pretty cool scene with the main character biting into a monkey. So that was cool, I guess.
Now…the second reason…oh boy…I’m kind of sad we didn’t get enough screentime with these two characters.
Geta and Caracalla deserved more screentime in Gladiator 2.
I’m so sad that Geta and Caracalla were treated like side characters in this sequel. They ruled Rome. And we just get what?
20 minutes at most???
Joseph Quinn (Geta) and Fred Hechinger (Caracalla) gave it their all in every scene they were in. They were so entertaining, and it’s a shame that we fans didn’t get more time with them.
Their brotherly bond was so interesting to me.
It was obvious that Geta actually cared for his brother. I was kind of surprised by this reveal, because I thought that Geta was going to deeply despise his brother, due to his disease inside his brain.
Instead, we get one moment with Geta holding him back from committing violence, and then we get one moment with Geta pleading with him before he dies. It was kind of sweet how Geta loved his twin.
Also, I really wanted more moments between Geta and the other main cast. He appeared to harbor a resentment toward Pedro’s character, and their chemistry was actually pretty awesome in two scenes.
I REALLY WANTED MORE SCENES BETWEEN GETA AND THE MAIN CHARACTER TOO!
That part where they were face to face was so good! I thought we were going to get a sort of rivalry between them. Shame that didn’t happen, but damn, that looked like a lot of potential right there!
Now, let’s get to the ranking of the deaths.
5. Lucilla (Death by arrow through chest).
This death really sucked in the film. I was hoping that the main dude wouldn’t see his mom die, but he was forced to witness it during one of the finale battles at the end of the film.
At least it was quick, but wow. That poor woman had been through so much. At least she will be peace now in the afterlife.
4. Marcus (Death by multiple arrows).
This death was by far the most shocking, because I wasn’t expecting Marcus to die that fast in the movie.
I thought he would live much longer during the movie, to help the people take down the emperors. This was certainly a very good twist in the movie, and I gasped out loud when he died.
Marcus was also a really interesting character. He was a good man who was forced to work for the emperors, doing their evil deeds of conquering other cities. I really wanted more moments with him and Geta.
It was obvious that Marcus did not like Geta at all. Like there was a scene that irritated me with Geta, because he wanted Marcus to kiss his hand. Like bro, Geta had a huge ego. I was lowkey hoping that Marcus would get to kill him.
3. Geta (Gets his head sliced off by Marcrinus and his twin).
This death really bothered me in the movie.
As I mentioned before, his death was caused by his own twin, and a man who was like an advisor to the emperors. I just thought that must have been such a betrayal to him, knowing that people he cared about was the cause of his death.
And wow, did they not hold back on his death.
Dude literally gets his hands sliced by his twin, and then he gets his head cut off. It was gory as hell, and I cringed when they kept going at him with the blade. Oh man, that death got to me.
We also needed more screen time to make his death more impactful. I bet if we had more moments with the twins, I would have felt a little sorry for him here.
No, not really. This guy had it coming 100%.
2. Caracalla (Gets huge ass needle shoved into his ear).
I physically cringed when Caracalla bit the dust.
I felt really bad for him, (kind of), because of what was wrong with his brain, dude trusted anyone that appeared to be on his side.
When his advisor shoved a needle straight into his ear, oh man, I freaked out. That death looked extremely painful, and I thought it was so ironic that his death was by something puncturing his brain.
And his poor pet monkey lost Caracalla. :(
1. Marcrinus (Literally gets butchered to death).
Hands down, this was the best death in the film. Denzel Washington's character was by far the most ruthless and cunning asshole in this film. He played the emperors, getting them both killed, and he even kills Lucilla.
All because he wanted the power of Rome all to himself.
He gets his karma by the main character when they get into a vicious battle with swords. This guy gets his arm sliced off, and then is delivered the finishing blow, ending this villain’s tyranny.
His death was pretty shocking too, because I wasn’t expecting his death to be that violent.
Karma is a bitch, ain’t it?
Well, I would love to share some good news about this film. Apparently, Ridley Scott announced that his original version was 4 hours long, and he mentioned a director’s cut.
It makes sense why he had to cut the length time to this movie, cause going to watch a 4-hour movie in theaters sounds pretty insane. And with trailers added, I think the majority of fans would have been frustrated sitting down for so long lol.
So, there is a possible chance he will consider releasing the full version to this movie later.
And there are more moments between the twins in that version too.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed, folks!
And before I end this article, I would like to answer one question to you all about this sequel.
Was I entertained?
Yes. Yes, I most certainly was.
