We're Finally Getting a New Silent Hill Film After 13 Years

It’s been a long time since we horror fans have gotten a new Silent Hill film in the popular and psychological horror franchise.
The first film Silent Hill was released back in 2006, and was received well by fans who had played the games. The film delivered on the atmosphere of the games, it mostly focused on practical effects when it came to the monster designs, and it was genuinely scary in some parts of the film.
The second film Silent Hill: Revelations, was released in 2012, and was definitely a mixed bag when it came to the acting and the CGI. In my opinion, some parts of the movie worked for me, but the acting definitely needed more work.
I also didn’t like the fact that one of the main character’s enemies was a love interest for her. In the game, she hated his guts.
The new film we are getting is called Return to Silent Hill, and it could possibly be releasing sometime this year.
While I’m really excited for the new installment, I do have some doubts.
And it’s all because the third entry is based on one of the best games in the franchise, Silent Hill 2.

After going over the film online and looking up the short teaser, I do have my own opinion with what I have seen. I have read plenty of comments from fans that have the same doubts and excitement that I do.
Here are the complaints that fans have been mentioning:
1. The main character, James Sunderland, does not look like the guy from the games.

James Sunderland is a blonde dude from the games. In the movie, James looks like a rich guy. This is my biggest complaint about the new film. I’m not sure how I’m going to feel about the new James.
Unless the director is going for a completely new reimagining of the sequel, then I guess I could excuse it. Other characters do look different too, but James has the biggest difference by far. Is it me, or could have this dude been casted as Henry Townshend from Silent Hill 4: The Room?
2. Will the movie be as depressing as the game?

This is another worry that I have, since the sequel is not a happy adventure. This game will depress the hell out of you. Both the original and the remake barely had any funny or lighthearted moments, and damn, did both games make me shed a couple of tears.
I’m curious if the movie will be able to capture that same magic.
I’m hoping that the director did not hold back on the chaos surrounding James and the other characters in this movie. Cause let me tell you, each of these characters is hiding a dark secret, and you will either hate or feel awful for these guys.
Now, onto the one thing that made me excited about the film:
The practical effects and monster designs look amazing.

When I saw Pyramid Head, the main monster in the game that continues to hunt and haunt James, I was immediately sold. His design looks awesome and uncanny at the same time. There is a part in the teaser that I believe he had attempted to lunge at James, but he barely dodged the attack.
I’m hoping that Pyramid Head will be terrifying, because in the first film, he was both powerful and creepy.
In the second film, they made him a total badass, and was one of the only things that saved the movie. And he was practical, so I guess that is one win for the sequel.
I did see other monster designs, but Pyramid Head is the only one who really stood out to me. I’m hoping that whoever plays the character is able to pull off the eerie movements of this dude. He never speaks, and James encounters him multiple times throughout the game.
What are your thoughts on the third installment? Are you excited, or do you have some doubts like me?
