Companion is an Absolute Blast of Surprises and Sci — Fi Horror

Major spoilers for Companion. Whoever wants to check this movie out, please turn back! Horror fans are going to love this movie, and should avoid spoilers as much as they can before watching this film!

I had no idea what to expect going to watch this film on a Tuesday night. I wasn’t able to watch this film the day it was released, and I had to wait awhile before I was finally able to check it out!

I knew the plot of the movie, but I still was so shocked by what occurred throughout the story. I was not expecting a Sci — Fi/horror movie, and wow, was it awesome!

Companion is about a couple going to spend time with friends in the middle of nowhere that goes completely wrong.

The story follows a couple named Iris and Josh, who are going to spend quality time with a couple of Josh’s friends. While the group is having a good time, Iris ends up murdering one of the friends in self-defense.

She comes back to the home covered in blood, holding the knife she used to kill the bastard. Josh tries to calm her down, as the group starts to freak out over the murder.

Then out of nowhere, Josh tells Iris to shut down.

Her eyes become a pure white, and the film from here on out becomes something absolutely insane and violent!

Iris discovers that she is a robot, and was programmed to murder that friend.

Poor Iris learns a dark truth from Josh, when she wakes up and finds herself tied up to a chair. She is a robot, that was programmed by Josh, so that he could have a girlfriend. He gets the bright idea to have Iris murder that friend, so that Josh and his friends could steal $12 million dollars from the property.

Iris obviously freaks out over this realization, and is able to escape from the property. She then learns that she is indeed a robot, when she steals Josh’s phone, finding an app that is dedicated to her programming. She plays with it for awhile, and decides to give herself 100% intelligence to escape from the group.

Then we get another insane twist!

There is a second robot among the group.

I literally gasped out loud when one of Josh’s friends was revealed to be a robot. It turns out that a guy named Eli, had his own robot that was programmed to be his boyfriend, that he names Patrick.

guess Iris was the only robot the studio purposely gave away, to convince audiences to go check out the film. The reveal did not even matter, because there was already another robot among the group.

Eli and Patrick work together to go and look for Iris, and after they share a heartfelt moment of Patrick telling Eli that he knows he is a robot, but will always love him regardless, Iris accidentally gives away her location.

Iris and Eli get into a fight, and she ends up the victor, killing him with his own gun. She gets away again, but is stopped by Patrick, who is now programmed by Josh to catch her. Patrick murders a cop that almost arrested Iris, and then she is shut down again.

Patrick returns Iris back to Josh, where more major shit goes down.

A girl named Kat that was a part of the group attempted to run away with her share of the $12 million, but when Josh orders Patrick to stop her, she is accidentally killed instead.

After this death, Iris wakes up under the capture of Josh.

What follows is a disturbing sequence that bothered the hell out of me.

Josh proceeds to torture Iris for a bit, and even makes her shoot herself, ending her program for good. I hated this scene with a passion, because wow, Josh was truly evil.

From this scene alone, I understood his character. He programmed Iris, because he never had a moment of control in his life. He was stuck in a constant cycle of relationships where he would get dumped, and would feel like a loser. For once, he did not feel that way, because he was the one in control.

Plus, he was continuing to order Patrick around, treating him like a lap dog…

Man, Jack Quaid knows how to play a good villain!

Luckily, Iris comes back from her slumber!

Iris is saved and goes after Josh.

Josh contacts people in charge of the robots to the residence, and comes up with a made up story to explain what happened. The employees believe the lie, and before they take Iris, they reveal to Josh that they will have to go through her memories, that is located within her stomach.

Josh immediately has Patrick kill one of the drivers, but Iris gets rebooted by the two employees inside of the van, and she is able to save the last driver by getting through to Patrick.

Patrick remembers the memories he shared with Eli, realizing that he was the love of his life. Patrick ends his programming for good, by sticking an electric rod inside of his mouth to damage his body.

This part really got to me, because poor Patrick deserved so much better. Eli did suck, but the love he shared with his robot was so damn pure. And he treated Patrick like a human being, compared to that of Josh who did not give a shit.

Iris is given a new program by the dude she saved, and she is now a free robot. She goes after Josh, and they get into a big fight. Iris gets the upper hand, and kills Josh.

Iris gets her happy ending by choosing to live freely as herself, and leaves the house with the $12 million.

The movie ends with Iris spotting another robot who looks just like her. She waves with her robotic hand after it got set on fire from her asshole boyfriend. The robot looks at her in utter confusion, and the audience died of laughter in this part.

I had a pretty fun audience during my watch in theaters!

I was deeply surprised by this film. I think Companion is one of the best horror films ever brought to the big screen, due to how original the concept was. It was like watching a super long Black Mirror episode.

For those who haven’t seen Black Mirror, go watch the first four seasons. You will love it!

I felt so freaking bad for Iris and Patrick, because they were mistreated by Josh. This film is like a sad metaphor of how technology is used by the real world. We should be grateful technology makes everything so easy, but we still take it for granted and treat it like shit.

If only time could go back to the good old days when technology did not even exist…
