'Middletide' Delivers a Fresh Take on the Murder Mystery Story
This novel was recommended to me by an employee at Barnes & Noble. She had noticed me going through the thriller section, and she recommended a book called Middletide, and she was really passionate while she was summarizing the plot for me.
After her reaction and her happy manner, I decided to give this book a shot. That reaction to the book was enough to convince me to buy it, and I can see why this thriller novel was received so well by critics and readers.
Middletide follows the story of a man named Elijah Leith, who is accused of murder. The woman who was killed was Erin Landry, who had lost so much in her life. Her daughter died in a car accident, and her husband left her while being consumed by grief.
Why was Elijah accused of her murder?
Well…it’s pretty crazy.
Elijah was a writer who failed to make it in the book business. He wrote a novel called Middletide, that was considered to be a murder mystery story.
And the murder that takes place in the novel was similar to that of the way that Erin’s body was discovered by authorities.
After reading that part of the novel, I knew I had to finish the book. I was so intrigued by the mystery, and I loved how human the characters felt in the book. They were all flawed in their own ways, but you couldn’t help but feel sorry for most of them, due to trauma they had each experienced.
It’s kind of rare to read a thriller novel with characters that you feel so sorry for, and actually really like at the same time. I’m tired of reading thriller books where I find myself getting annoyed with the main character.
It’s always the same old when it comes to the majority of these thriller novels, the main character is kind of an asshole, and it got kind of repetitive at times. It felt pretty good to read about someone I could actually like upon first meeting.
Elijah was someone to root for, and that is one of the biggest reasons why this novel worked so well for me.
I can’t believe that this is the author’s debut novel. It’s a pretty good start, and I’m curious to see what other sort of novels Sarah Crouch is going to write next! It almost felt like I was reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, and it’s been a long time since I felt stressed out like this with a thriller novel.
I don’t want to spoil any major plot points. The third act at the end was so damn good, and it’s been a long time since I was surprised by a twist!
Go read Middletide, folks! It’s a damn good story!
