‘Come Closer’ is a Disturbing, Demonic Possession Tale with No Escape

I finished reading this book in one day.

It was only 145 pages…of pure Hell.

I did not expect the book to actually scare me.

It’s pretty rare for horror novels to scare the shit out of me, but this one genuinely got to me as I made sure nothing creepy was hiding in my bedroom after I shut off the lights.

This demonic story is creepy as shit.

We follow the story of a woman named Amanda, who is living a happy life. She is married to a good man named Edward, and has a successful career as an architect.

Everything starts to go downhill when she hands over her proposal for one of the main projects in her job, accidentally giving her boss a different kind of proposal…that contains vile insults aim directly at her boss.

He obviously gets really pissed off, and confronts Amanda about it. She apologizes, and they both think that it was a messed-up prank by one of the employees.

Amanda then admits that she probably would have written that in the first place, since she does carry a heavy dislike towards her boss. This part threw me off, because I realized that something was already going on with Amanda.

And wow, it only gets worse from here on out.

Amanda starts to exhibit demonic possession, and even dreams about the demon haunting her.

It all begins with the tapping occurring throughout the couple’s home. They have no idea where the sound is coming from, and Edward even points out that it’s strange how the tapping happens whenever she is at the house.

During these strange moments of supernatural phenomenon, Amanda tells Edward about an imaginary friend she had when she was a kid.

It was a woman named Pansy, and she even claimed to have seen her once in the flesh. Of course, Amanda doesn’t want to accept it, because who the hell would want to in the beginning???

Amanda begins to show a lot of strange behavior whenever she interacts with people later on. She gets angry at her husband over the simplest things, a dog that she befriends is now afraid of her, she starts to smoke cigarettes again, and she even stabs a cigarette into her husband’s skin without knowing why she did something so bizarre and harmful.

Amanda also meets her imaginary friend throughout the book when she dreams. They are both sitting on sand, by an ocean that is the color of red. Amanda’s interactions with this imaginary friend are creepy and it made me a little sick.

I couldn’t stand it when her imaginary friend would randomly lick her across the face. It felt so violating, but I think that was the intention of these moments. Amanda didn’t seem to mind it at first…which I’m just, how? I would have punched the imaginary friend in the face for doing that.

Things actually get even worse from here.

Amanda finds a book to read for fun that goes over demonic possession, and she starts to learn that she is exhibiting all of these signs. She starts to take action to save herself, but everything just continues to go wrong.

Amanda’s behavior worsens throughout the book, and she eventually starts to murder random people.

Amanda goes off the deep end, slowly becoming crazy and terrifying.

She doesn’t remember random periods of time. She kills one dude with a box cutter with no memory of it, and even attempts to drown a little girl. She constantly cheats on her husband and berates him with any chance that she gets.

Of course, she has no control over the demon inside of her, her imaginary friend that she learns is named Naamah. This demon is known for temptation and seduction, the same behavior that Amanda is showing.

Amanda tries desperately to get help, but no matter what she does, the demon is always there to remind her that it’s already too late.

Then…pure terror strikes into Amanda’s life.

Amanda is now completely helpless to the demon’s power.

She has no control over her body anymore toward the end of the book.

Amanda is aware that she can’t control herself, and as she desperately tries to get through to her husband, her voice is saying completely different to him. He ends up leaving her, for someone else.

Amanda kills one of her employees, and then completely stops going to work much later after the murder. Amanda is now completely alone in the house, still sleeping with multiple men, with no control.

Edward makes a shocking return into her life, but instead of wanting to stay with her, he confesses that he wants a divorce. Amanda loses complete control, and she even feels her consciousness fade away.

She sees the demon tell her that she has officially won.

When Amanda wakes up, Edward is dead. Amanda breaks down, and she is arrested for the murder. She is sent to a psychiatric hospital, because she gets away with pleading insanity. She is still possessed, and whenever she dreams, she sees the demon there waiting for her.

Amanda accepts her defeat, as the book ends with the demon reminding her that she loves Amanda; while licking her face.

What a dreadful ending.

I was hoping that Amanda would be able to escape, but I think she was meant for this horrific fate.

I love how the book never explained how she ended up possessed, but I believe if she had noticed the signs earlier, her soul could have been saved.

But I also wonder if Amanda purposely accepted her fate, because the demon did let her know that she allowed her into Amanda’s life, possessing her body. Amanda always felt alone, and now she could have someone that would always stay by her side, no matter what.

If that is true, then why the hell would she let this thing stay inside of her?

If I learned I had a demon inside of me, I would have instantly gotten rid of the bastard. I would have fought the thing in my dreams, if that is what it took.

Fist fights every night. Screw that!
