Nosferatu is a Brilliant Gothic Horror Story of Love and Terror
I watched Nosferatu on New Year’s Day in 2024.
I did not expect to be mesmerized by the story, the visuals, and the characters. The vampire… gave me a different kind of feeling.
Whenever that creepy bastard was on screen, my body was completely tensed up. I couldn’t stand his presence… because he honestly scared the shit out of me.
That voice that was given to his character made it so much worse for me… hell no. I’m jumping into the lake or accepting any other kind of death to avoid getting killed by that thing.
Before I begin to delve into my horror review, there is one thing I want to discuss before we begin. I cannot believe that Bill Skarsgard played the vampire. I was beyond impressed, and I have to say, that it’s now my favorite performance by the actor.
I love how he takes on roles ofmonsters in horror, and he is amazing at tackling all of these terrifying creatures.
I had to research how he did the voice of the vampire, and I was shocked to learn that he took part in opera singing and trained his voice to take on something called “Mongolian throat singing.”
The dedication that he did for this role is incredible. I gotta give a round of applause to Bill for pulling this role off. He scared the crap out of me, and it takes a lot for a horror monster to get under my skin!
And I also can’t forget Lily-Rose Depp, who gave a haunting performance as the main target of the vampire. Every single scene with her character was amazing, especially during those moments when she got possessed!
Damn, she was great!
Now, on to the movie review!
A woman named Ellen is targeted by a vampire known as Count Orlok, and it returns for her years later.
Ellen was the unfortunate victim and love interest of Count Orlok, who was determined to find her for a long time. Ellen is now married to a good man named Thomas, who is pulled into her madness when he gets a job opportunity as an estate agent to earn money from this mysterious Count.
She begs him not to go, but he convinces her that they need to do this in order to live a good life, and she lets him go. Thomas meets up with this Count Orlok, and is sucked into a literal nightmare.
The vampire drinks his blood, scares the absolute shit out of him, and even takes something from him that belonged to Ellen. This item turns out to be a locket, and he uses this item to get closer to Ellen.
Ellen begins to suffer at home, experiencing the same terror she once felt many years ago when she was a child. Her friends that Thomas left her with, Friedrich and Anna, struggle to look after her, and hire a doctor to watch over her.
The doctor decides to have a professor study her, and he comes to the conclusion that she is being haunted by a pure evil that is determined to have her. Thomas then finds a way to escape the castle by accident, falling from the window of the castle when the Count’s dogs attempt to attack him.
The battle to save Ellen’s soul begins, and the vampire finds a way to arrive to the same city where Ellen is residing.
The vampire begins his reign of terror, killing anyone that stands in the way of taking his love away.
Count Orlok begins to murder the city and anyone close to Ellen to reach her.
This part of the film shocked me to my core.
I did not expect the movie to get that dark, and the entire sequence is a wonderful gothic horror.
Count Orlok gets on a ship, murders everyone onboard, and brings a shitload of rats to spread a plague throughout the city. He even has a right-hand man working for him; the same man who hired Thomas to go to Count Orlok’s castle to bring him closer to Ellen.
The plague sequence is brutal.
One part that bothered me was what happened to Friedrich’s loved ones.
Friedrich’s entire family is murdered by Count Orlok.
I felt so sorry for Friedrich’s character.
He was a man who offered his hospitality to Thomas and Ellen, not knowing that an evil would arrive and rip everything away from him.
His wife is corrupted with the plague, and while he is looking after her, he decides to kick out everyone that was associated with the investigation of the creature that he refuses to believe in.
The Count arrives to his house in the middle of one night, and places him under a spell, so that he wouldn’t wake. His wife hears the screams of their daughters, and runs to their bedroom, where she finds the creature killing them.
He drops their bodies, and murders Friedrich’s pregnant wife offscreen.
We then cut to the funeral, where three coffins are being carried away, while Friedrich and his companions are watching this enfold. Friedrich goes mad, gets infected with the plague. He then enters the tomb of his family, and the main characters find him… in the arms of his dead wife.
It’s pure horror at its finest, and damn… that was a tough watch.
Ellen realizes after this moment that in order to defeat the Count, she must give her soul up to him.
We get a crazy ending that I did not expect…
Ellen gives up her life to save her true love.
Credit to Nosferatu Ending: Ellen & Count Orlok’s Shocking Fate Explained By Director & StarsEllen and the professor both trick Thomas and the doctor, the remaining survivors of the film. He takes them to the lair of the Count, that turns out to be the right-hand man that they kill instead.
Thomas freaks out, and runs back to the city to save Ellen. The professor stays behind to set the lair on fire, while the doctor also joins Thomas to save his wife.
We get probably the most infamous scene of the film, with Ellen and the Count both getting married, reciting their vows in their own way. Ellen and the Count crawl into bed together, and he feasts on her blood the entire night.
The Count and Ellen continue their embrace until the morning. The Count sees the light, and Ellen holds him as he dies from the sun touching his skin. Thomas arrives to find Ellen, and as he holds her hand, he realizes that she is now gone, dead from blood loss.
The film ends with the professor apologizing to Thomas, telling him that it was the only way to save everyone.
Now that… is an INSANE ending.
Throughout the film, Ellen had a sort of dark desire coursing through her. Despite her disgust toward the Count, she secretly wanted him, like how he wanted her. In a way, they both got to comfort each other and make their wishes come true before they submitted to their deaths.
It’s a sad love story, that required a heavy sacrifice in order to save Ellen’s true love from the vampire’s evil: Thomas.
I freaking loved this movie… the horror was beautiful and disturbing… I loved every second of it!
