The Outwaters is a Brilliant and Confusing Found Footage Horror Film that Will Mess with Your Head

The Outwaters is a great journey into the world of the unknown. And this is probably the craziest found footage horror film I have ever seen.

This movie may not be for everyone, but I have to give it credit, it isn’t afraid to do its own thing with the use of the horror genre.

The story follows a man named Robbie, his brother, and his two friends, Angela and Michelle. They are excited to travel to the Mojave Desert to film a music video.

This already sounds like a cool project, and a disaster waiting to happen.

After spending some time in the desert, the group hears strange noises, and sees weird lights in the middle of the darkness. Robbie and the crew even found a hole with strange sounds coming from within.

Then…something really awful happens. Something so unexpected, that it actually scared the shit out of me.

Robbie sees a man standing in the dark, holding an axe.

I unfortunately couldn’t find an image of the man holding an axe. This part is probably the most iconic part of the entire film. The man attacks the whole group with the axe, leaving everyone severely injured and afraid.

Robbie is left to fend for himself as he desperately searches for his friends in the dark, experiencing both pain, and from the looks of it, finds himself in another world.

Robbie falls into a whole other universe from the looks of it, as he tries desperately to help his friends. He sees Michelle running in the desert, completely soaked in blood. No matter how much he tries to help her, he never reaches her.

Then he teleports again and finds Angela. She is found inside of one of their tents, covered in blood. She is laughing, holding her belly, as if she is pregnant with something that is obviously not human.

He teleports once again, and finds his brother, covered in blood, acting normal. He even founds himself in the house of their mother.

Then he travels again, and awakens back in the desert. It is dark again, and he finds some kind of beast wandering the desert. Robbie is panicking, and the creature begins to call out to other beasts that resemble the strange sounds that Robbie and his friends heard before their nightmare began.

Robbie teleports one final time, finding himself back in the daylight in the Mojave Desert.

Now, this is where a crazy twist is revealed.

Trust me, this movie sounds confusing, but this reveal explains everything.

Robbie and his group had been filming their music video in a government restricted area.

Once Robbie finds that sign, I instantly knew that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

This poor group of innocent people were thrown into some kind of government experiment, that somehow teleported each of them into a Lovecraftian world full of monsters.

As if things couldn’t get any worse, Robbie discovers a horrible sight. He finds his friends…but their heads are stuck on top of three pikes. Robbie proceeds to have a breakdown.

Like who the hell wouldn’t?

He then finds a tooth that possibly belonged to one of the monsters, and he uh…mutilates himself. He drops the camera, and walks away with his hands in the air, reaching toward the sun.

Whew, now that is a really shitty ending. Talk about a bad way to die.

So…I’m sure that the majority of you are so confused right now. I have decided to come up with my own theories, as to what really happened during the strange journey that Robbie and the crew experienced.

Theory 1: They were transported into a new world that the government accidentally opened up.

This theory makes perfect sense, because the group did hear several earthquakes in the area before they traveled to the desert. Perhaps the government opened up this Lovecraftian world, and had this random group suffer the consequences.

They were each transported to their own different surreal nightmares, and it explains why Robbie could never reach any of them. They were all stuck in their own worlds, and that is why none of them could be saved.

Theory 2: Robbie was possessed by some kind of Lovecraftian beast the whole time and killed his friends.

This theory is so cool to me, because it makes sense in creepy way, and it explains why Michelle kept trying to run away from him in that one scene.

I think Robbie was the guy with the axe, who attempted to harm each of his friends. I think without even knowing it, Robbie had removed each of their heads and placed them on top of pikes.

Then he killed himself to finish up the sick ritual. It also explains why Robbie never let go of the camera the whole time he was stuck in that world. I think whatever it was, was punishing Robbie in a demented way.

The Lovecraftian monsters forced him to do their sick deeds, and once they were done with him, they had Robbie harm himself in a severe way, using one of the monsters’ teeth.

This is why I loved The Outwaters.

It doesn’t make any sense, and none of our questions are ever answered. This is what found footage horror is supposed to be!

This is probably the first found footage horror movie that I have seen that is a pretty close contender with The Blair Witch Project!
