Squid Game Ends with a Cutthroat and Bittersweet Finale
I was beyond shocked with how this fantastic series ended. I thought it was the perfect ending to this story, it was both a good and bad ending for many characters in the series. I'm about to delve into major spoilers, so please turn back now if you don't want to get spoiled!
Season 3 kicks off with the main character, Gi - Hun, being forced to return back to the games, after his failed attempt to take down the games and the people in charge for good back in season 2. Many of his old teammates are brutally murdered during the games throughout season 3, and the only sole survivor he is determined to protect, is a baby that was forced to become a player after the mother was killed. To make matters worse, he also finds out that the Front Man was another player in the game, who got close to him and betrayed him and his friends in season 2.
While Gi - Hun is experiencing his own struggles within the world of these evil masterminds, the detective and his own group are caught in the crossfire of the evil group when they are getting closer to the location of the island. The detective loses multiple members of his team, but he is able to eventually find the island when 246, a player from the games is saved by one of the Squid Games' soldiers.
The series builds up to an insane finale, when Gi - Hun gives up his own life in the final game to save the baby. The games are then permanently shut down when the Coast Guard arrives with the detectives' help, but he fails to stop the games for good when he runs into the Front Man, his brother. The location is blown up, leading to the failure of the good guys realizing they were not able to beat the bad guys.
It's a brutal way to end the series, but I loved how realistic this ending was. I loved how the director went with a bleak ending, but at least some of the characters got their own happy endings.
- The detective is given the baby from his brother, and he is given the prize money to ensure that he and the baby will live a long and happy life.
- Gi - Hun's daughter is given the prize money he never bothered to spend.
- Player 246 reunites with his daughter, who is cured from her sickness.
- The soldier who saved player 246 leaves behind the games for good, and will possibly reunite with her daughter that she assumed was dead.
- Two family members that Gi - Hun promised to look after in the ending of the first season are both given happy endings.
And then we get the cutthroat ending. Even though the games are most likely shut down in Korea, the ones in America are still continuing. The Front Man does see one of the games being taken place, the same one that convinced people to play in the Korea games. It's such a messed-up ending, and I love the director for not giving a damn. I was so pissed off with the bad ending that the good guys didn't fully win, but at least the main cast got the happy ending they deserved.
I was really hoping the series wouldn't continue, but it appears that David Fincher will be directing the American version. While I know that Fincher is a fantastic director, I'm not sure if the American version will have the same impact. I love the punch to the guts ending we got...why Hollywood always feels the need to give everything a spinoff is beyond me.
Even though it's upsetting that this series will continue, I believe that the Korean series got the perfect ending.
