‘The Mummy’ is a Terrifying and Original Take on One of the Universal Classic Monsters

The Mummy is considered to be a beloved action-adventure film by many fans. I will never forget my first watch of this film. I was both entertained and terrified by the mummies present throughout the film. Seriously, these mummies are probably the scariest ever created in horror media.

We don’t get your shambling slow mummies that everyone is used to with the original black and white film. In The Mummy, we get mummies that bring plagues, kill multiple people in horrific ways, and can sometimes move pretty damn fast to take down their enemies.

Not even bullets can faze these beasts.

Despite the director and crew bringing to life an unforgettable adventure of pure terror, we have a great story with a cast of characters that all have amazing chemistry with one another. Even though this film can be pretty damn dark, the characters make this story feel like an adventure film that you will love from beginning to end.

The story follows two siblings who team up with a fighter to locate the mummy’s tomb.

Evelyn and Jonathan Carnahan work in a museum curator Dr. Terrence Bey, in Cairo, 1926 AD. The siblings discover a map leading to an ancient tomb containing the body of Imhotep, a man who was severely punished for having an affair with a woman who belonged to a Pharaoh.

He was mummified alive as punishment, but he will one day return, and it must be prevented at all costs. For if he does, untold consequences will follow in his wrath.

This story does not stop the siblings from undergoing their adventure, since they are both after their own wants at the location of Imhotep. They decide to hire Rick O’ Connell who experienced his own strange experience on the property of Imhotep, and he becomes their right-hand man.

The crew runs into other groups of people, who are also after the same things they want from Imhotep. It literally turns into a competition of who will make it to the location first from here on out. The main cast and the other crew travel by ship, all harboring a sort of resentment towards one another.

Rick eventually learns that the siblings are after a book and riches from Imhotep’s location, but Rick’s warnings of what is waiting for them does not stick with the siblings.

Evelyn and Jonathan immediately find out the hard way…

The crew is attacked two times by a group of people known as Medjai.

These dudes are beyond determined to make sure that both crews do not make it to Imhotep. Their ship is set on fire, and the majority of the crew survive. Then they are attacked again by the Medjai at Imhotep’s location, that ends up becoming a battle royale during the night.

Rick ends the fight with a stick of dynamite, threatening to blow himself up with everyone else. The leader, Ardeth Bay, leaves them with one more warning before leaving with his men.

And if you think that’s insane, some of the crew members are caught in traps at the location, getting sprayed with acid and killed by bugs.

These poor people could not catch a break.

Everything then becomes ten times worse when Evelyn finds the cursed book of Imhotep.

The book that Evelyn was after during the first half of the film comes back to bite everyone in the ass when she reads from the book. This decision leads to utter chaos and death. A plague of locusts go after both groups, and they all run for their lives to Imhotep’s resting place.

During the ensuing chaos, one of the crew members loses his glasses during the panic of everyone around him. He runs into a now alive Imhotep, who steals his tongue and eyes for himself. Rick and Evelyn then run into the beast, but despite Rick’s total fear of the mummy version of Imhotep, he blows him away with a shotgun.

This part killed me with Rick’s sudden reaction, but man, that mummy was freaking creepy.

Imhotep watches them escape in annoyance, and the duo reunite with Jonathan, the other group, and Ardeth. He tells everyone that they have now unleashed a horrible curse, and both groups decide to get the hell out of there, to avoid both the Medjai and Imhotep. They go back to Cairo, not realizing that one person was going to screw everything up for them.

A coward named Beni offers to serve Imhotep, and takes him to Cairo to continue his reign of terror.

A lot of bad stuff goes down once Imhotep arrives to Cairo. Fire falls from the sky, he takes the skin of several of the group members to restore his human body when he was alive, and he plans to use Evelyn as a sacrifice to bring back the woman he fell in love with many years ago.

Ardeth and Dr. Terrence both reveal to the siblings and Rick that they were trying to stop the resurrection of Imhotep for years, but now it was time to find a way to take him down for good. They reveal to the group that they must find the cursed book to trap Imhotep once again.

The group is then cornered by a fully restored Imhotep, who seeks to take Evelyn with him. She gives herself up to save everyone, but Imhotep does not hesitate to have his army go after her allies. Dr. Terrence sacrifices himself to save Rick, Ardeth, and Jonathan, and the remaining heroes are able to escape.

Rick and his two allies are now on a mission to save Evelyn and to defeat Imhotep.

Rick asks an old friend to fly them to Imhotep’s location, but this decision gets Rick’s friend killed. The trio find their way to Imhotep, and they fight a small army of mummies. Ardeth tells Rick and Jonathan to run, and he stays behind to fight the army, leaving his fate up in the air.

The duo find Imhotep about to sacrifice Evelyn, but they put a stop to the ritual. Jonathan and Rick fight Imhotep and his mummies, both men getting the crap beaten out of them as Evelyn fights Imhotep’s undead lover. Jonathan saves Rick and Evelyn by reading from the book, controlling the mummies to kill Imhotep’s lover.

This angers Imhotep, and he goes after Rick, both the main hero and villain fighting one on one. Evelyn and Jonathan save Rick, by making Imhotep immortal. He is defeated by Rick with one stab to the torso, and he leaves them with his last words, as he resorts back to his mummified form.

“Death is the only the beginning.”

The film ends with the trio escaping and living happily ever after.

Imhotep’s domain begins to collapse after his defeat, and the trio make their escape. Beni stays behind to collect treasure, sealing his fate by millions of meat-eating bugs as they consume his body in the dark.

The trio escape just in time, and they watch as everything completey falls apart, confirming the total defeat of Imhotep. The trio gets a huge jump scare when Ardeth reveals himself, thanking the heroes for saving the day.

The film ends with Evelyn and Rick falling in love, and Jonathan leaves with a bag of riches, not realizing that Beni made his dream come true.

This movie is one of my favorite horror films ever made. I love how the film had action from beginning to end, it was nicely fast paced, and the characters were so awesome to watch. The story is so damn good, and it was so effective when it came to the use of the Mummy.

Imhotep is by far the scariest mummy villain ever brought to life. I wish we had more scary mummy movies like this…

Well…I do have a neat little announcement to make. We are getting a brand new The Mummy movie in 2026. By the guy who made Evil Dead Rise. Now that is some of the best news about a horror movie release I have heard in a long time.

The best part…is that we could now be getting a violent mummy movie. Now I’m beyond curious to see how that is going to play out!
