Why The Blair Witch Project is My Favorite Horror Movie of All Time

Have you ever seen a horror movie that captured you? And you just couldn’t look away from the screen, no matter how hard you tried?

That is what this found footage film did for me, the first time I ever watched The Blair Witch Project. I was quite young, and my mom kept on insisting that this film would scare the crap out of me.

Sure enough, she was right.

I was left filled with tension throughout my body until the movie ended. I kept looking around the room, expecting something to be waiting for me somewhere in my bedroom.

It was pitch black, and I was suddenly regretting that I never had a light set up in my room during the night. I was visibly shaken, and it took me a minute to realize what I was feeling.

I was scared.

And it was the first time I ever felt this way about a horror movie.

The Blair Witch Project is the only movie that I have seen multiple times that scares me with each viewing.

The Blair Witch Project is one of those few films that doesn’t explain a single thing throughout the entirety of the runtime.

We are only given puzzle pieces of information, that will aid us in creating our own theories as to what was really happening out there in the woods.

The theories this film created is next level great, and I love that horror fans are still coming up with their interpretations as to what happened to the three college students.

One of my favorite theories is pretty crazy. Some fans believe that Heather was murdered by Mike and Josh. They had set up an entire trap for her, to lure their victim to the woods.

It makes sense, and it scares me that I can actually back up this theory pretty good with a bunch of explanations.

That’s one of the biggest reasons why I love this film so much. It’s up to us as the viewer to come up with our own stories!

The ending still bothers me to this day.

I can’t stand the ending to The Blair Witch Project. I get scared every single time, and I always feel an actual chill go down my back whenever Heather is screaming hysterically before she meets an unknown fate.

Heather and Mike lose Josh in an unknown way that remains a mystery to this day in the film. While they are looking for Josh again, they find a house in the middle of the woods that literally appears out of nowhere.

The duo hears Josh calling from inside, and they venture into the house. Then Heather and Mike both end up separating from panic and fear, and then Heather finds Mike facing the corner of the room.

It doesn’t make a lick of sense as to why Mike is calmly standing in the corner of the room, as he doesn’t bother to help Heather who continues to scream at Mike in total fear.

It’s not a normal reaction to a horrific situation, and I think that is why this ending gets to me so much. Watching Mike, a guy who was so relentless to somehow save Josh, was just standing there not moving a muscle?

Something was obviously down there with Mike, and it scares the crap out of me, BECAUSE WE NEVER KNOW WHAT IT IS THAT MADE MIKE COMPLY SO EASILY.

Like, man. That is scary as shit. And man…listening to Heather’s cries of fear is too much for me to endure.

The Blair Witch Project is a perfect horror film that doesn’t make any sense, and that is why I love it so much. That is what horror is supposed to be. Pure horror that will leave you scared shitless.
