The Whip and the Body is a Strange and Creepy Love Story

The Whip and the Body is one of the strangest horror films I have ever seen. I had been wanting to watch this movie for a long time, and I finally got my chance last night while scrolling through Shudder, an app meant only for horror fans.

I was not expecting this movie to be so fascinating and eerie, and the main focus on the film was this couple who was deeply in love with one another.

We follow the story of a man who was kicked out of the family for killing a family member.

A man named Kurt returns to his family, and not all of his family members welcome him with open arms. One woman wants to kill him for the death of her daughter, his father also wants him dead, his brother, and Kurt’s cousin is pretty pissed off when she spots him.

Even their waiter isn’t too happy to see his return.

However, there is only one person who is happy to see him again.

Nevenka, the love of his life, who is now married to his brother.

She is the only one who doesn’t hold anything against him, despite being the alleged cause of a murder in the family.

Kurt and Nevenka both possess some sort of darkness within themselves, and they deeply love one another, each not afraid to show their true selves to each other.

Then an unexpected tragedy strikes from out of nowhere, and I was so surprised to see this character bite the dust.

Kurt is murdered the same way like the woman who was murdered in the past.

While Nevenka is completely distraught over his death, his family doesn’t seem to give a damn when he passes. They don’t question how he died, and some of them assume that the ghost of the woman took revenge and murdered him the same way he once did to her.

They hold a funeral for him, and Nevenka is trying her hardest to hold back tears as she watches the coffin lid be closed on him forever. Later that night, Nevenka gets a sudden visit from Kurt, who is now back from the dead.

She goes crazy and tells Kurt’s brother about his return, but no one is taking her seriously. Nevenka is slowly turning into a mad woman, claiming over and over that Kurt is back from the dead. She is terrorized by him throughout the film, but she still shows her love for him, revealing to him that she never stopping loving him.

The next person to die is Kurt’s father, and the family realizes that perhaps Nevenka is telling the truth. Once they see the muddy footprints inside of several parts of the mansion, they decide to take matters into their owns.

The family breaks into Kurt’s tomb to burn his body.

Kurt’s brother and the waiter set Kurt’s body on fire, and they give chase to what they think is his ghost, but they find Nevenka instead. She is embracing Kurt’s ghost, but when the men spot her, she is all by herself, holding the same weapon that was used to kill Kurt, the father, and the woman in the past.

She tells Kurt’s brother that she is going to make sure Kurt can never bring harm to them again, and she stabs herself. She dies in the arms of Kurt’s sibling, and the waiter tells him that Nevenka had become mad, and most likely murdered his father and his brother.

The film ends with Kurt’s body continuing to burn, but an item that was used to show his love for her was burning along with him: the whip, that he would use on Nevenka whenever she wanted to feel pain.

I loved that ending shot we got at the end of the film. While it could have all been in Nevenka’s head, how the hell did the whip end up in Kurt’s coffin?

Perhaps Nevenka was telling the truth the whole time, but due to her madness, no one ever believed her.
