5 Horror Novels to Read in Time for Halloween
Halloween is about to arrive in 2 weeks. I've been having a good time watching multiple horror movies, while reading fantastic horror novels I have been finding by accident. I love to come across new horror books from random stores, and I freaked out when I finally got my hands on these books.
I was blown away by each of these stories. These books consist of all kinds of horror: psychological, murder, slashers, and extreme gore.
Here are five horror books to read, just 2 weeks before Halloween!
5. Disappearance at Devil's Rock by Paul Tremblay
I was not expecting the book to be so tragic. I was really looking forward to reading more of Tremblay's work, and I loved how messed up this novel was. We follow the story of a family determined to solve the disappearance of a kid named Josh, that is starting to leave behind supernatural clues for his mother and sister.
He had vanished while spending time with his friends at Devil's Rock, and his friends were left in shock with how to process what happened to him.
The novel takes a dark turn toward the third act, and the family is left in total conflict with how to feel about Josh's character during the novel. I couldn't believe how disturbing the book became, and I was left in anticipation to see the crazy reveal.
4. Survivor Song by Paul Tremblay
This is one of the best 'zombie' books I have read this year. A deadly virus infects the world, and people struggle to control the virus as it spreads quickly. A doctor is determined to help her best friend, who gets beaten while pregnant, and loses her husband from the attack.
I was not expecting this book to be a secret sequel to Disappearance at Devil's Rock, and the two friends from the novel offer to help the doctor and her friend travel to another location to help the doctor's friend.
This story is so sad, and I love how powerful the characters were written in this book.
3. The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose
This book contains one of the most insane plots I have ever seen from a thriller novel. We follow the story of a dude who is caught cheating on his mistress, and the worse part...is that his mistress is suddenly murdered, and he is blamed for it.
His wife, a lawyer, offers to represent him, despite her hatred for him when she feels the ultimate betrayal. Her husband honestly pissed me off so much. He was a piece of crap from the beginning, and I felt so bad for the wife.
Then once I reached the ending, I didn't know how to feel anymore...
2. One by One by Frieda McFadden
This is one of Frieda's best novels. This book feels more like a slasher novel, and the mystery behind the murders is intense. We follow the story of a woman named Claire, and her husband, Noah. They are struggling through to get through their rocky marriage, and decide to go on a hiking trip with their friends.
Claire is secretly cheating on her husband with his best friend, and she doesn't know how she is going to tell him the truth about not loving him anymore. This confrontation never arrives, once the group find themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere on the road, surrounded by woods.
I thought it was awesome how the story remained in only one location. It's not easy to pull a novel like this off, but Frieda's execution of this story was perfection.
1. This Girl's a Killer by Emma C. Wells
This is one of my favorite horror novels so far in October. We follow the story of a young woman named Cordelia Black, who rids the world of men who are secretly monsters. She has a best friend and a goddaughter she adores to death, but takes a huge disliking to her friend's new boyfriend, Simon.
Cordelia decides to take matters into her own hands, and ends up murdering him in her own house. This leads to Cordelia experiencing a downward spiral of madness as she struggles to get through her everyday life that could possibly lead to a lawsuit, while trying to cover up her crimes.
Cordelia is absolutely insane, and one of my favorite slashers in horror history.
Have you read any of these novels? What other horror books would you want me to check out?
