In the Mouth of Madness is a Total Madhouse of Confusion and Terror

I can’t believe I had no idea that John Carpenter had directed this film. The only reason why I started watching this movie, was because I had heard from so many horror fans that this film has a huge cult following. I had no idea of the story, only that I knew that the main dude in this film was the main character who came out in the first Jurassic Park.

I was so impressed by the main storyline concept, and I can’t believe no horror movie has done a storyline like this before. It’s so creative, and pretty scary to imagine happening in real life.

What if someone was writing out their own story? A story that involves you, and your actions will determine the ending the author has written out for you? It’s freaking scary, and even though I’m a huge horror reader, I would go insane.

And that is exactly what happens to our main character in this story.

We follow the story of a man who has gone insane.

A man named John Trent is taken to an asylum, where he desperately claims he is not insane. A man goes over to speak with him, wanting to help Trent get out of the asylum. Trent reveals that something bad is taking place in the world, and he begins to tell his story, because whatever evil thing is going on, it’s already inside of him.

Trent was an insurance investigator, who is suddenly attacked by a man with an axe, that is revealed to be a book agent for an author who has apparently made many people go mad. People who had gotten ahold of his new book called, ‘In The Mouth of Madness,’ have lost their minds, several have gone through extreme body horror, and they have committed acts of violence.

Trent is asked by the people in charge of the author’s new book, to go and check on the author, who allegedly lives in a small town that does not exist. A woman named Styles, who works in the book business is sent with him, and things go wrong when they arrive to the town.

Trent and Styles find themselves trapped with people who have gone mad, being exposed to the evil within the author’s new book.

Once Trent and Styles realize that something is wrong with the town, they both attempt to uncover the truth. Trent refuses to accept that the town is now cursed by the author’s evil, believing that everyone is somehow involved in a sort of scheme to promote the author’s book. Styles believes that the author has something to do with this, and she goes on her own to search for the author.

It turns out to be a big mistake, and the author forces her to read his new book. She instantly becomes mad, and is sent after Trent. He tries to escape once he sees several people have undergone a sort of body horror transformation, and runs into Styles, who is begging for Trent to help her.

Trent attempts to leave the town with Styles, but the madness completely takes over her, and she tells Trent that the author has written her character in this manner, and she must bring harm to Trent. After multiple attempts to escape from the town, Trent is finally able to get out of the madness once he finds that he somehow teleported out of the town.

He runs into the author on a bus, and Trent experiences a moment of madness once he sees that the world around him is now blue. Trent wakes up from his nightmare in terror, but he is comforted by the people on the bus. Trent returns to the book business, only to learn that in his confused state, he had given up the manuscript to the new book.

Trent freaks out once he also hears that Styles is now gone, and the book company now has no idea of her existence. Trent realizes that she has been written out of the world, because like the author told him before in past scenes of the film, he is now the leader of his own story, and the world is now part of his book.

Trent goes fully mad after this interaction, and he does not hesitate to kill a random guy now reading the author’s new published book. We cut back to Trent in the present time, speaking with the man. He leaves Trent, a sort of fear now seeming to take over him, once he hears that the world is possibly screwed.

When the man leaves, Trent learns that the world is now gone.

Trent is able to leave the asylum on his own, and learns that the world has changed. He wanders a world that has been destroyed, and he comes across a movie theater, that is now featuring the movie based on the author’s book. Trent gets popcorn, sits on to watch the movie, and he starts to laugh, when he sees himself on the screen.

The movie ends with Trent’s laughter turning into sorrow, as he accepts his new reality.

I really liked how confusing the movie was. I think that John Carpenter purposely filmed the movie like this, to resemble the mind of someone going mad.

The concept of now being a character in a book is awesome, but knowing that the author is now in control of your life is the worse fate to imagine.
