5 Books That Deserve the Book of the Year Award

I seriously have read some damn good books these past few months. I was not expecting to read masterpiece after masterpiece, these stories were some of the best I have read so far in 2025. I binge read every single book; the stories were so addictive to read this time around!

It was almost like I was watching a movie in theaters, or bingeing a television series, the stories were that GREAT.

I definitely had exciting stories to read during the month of October, and I really enjoyed my spooky tales, including a random thriller novel that needs a movie ASAP!

Picture of the five books I read.

5. Sister Butcher Sister by KD Aldyn

This is one of those psychological stories that feels so cutthroat and disturbing as you read the book. We follow the story of three sisters, who are now sort of divided after the little sister accuses a family member of harming her years later, ruining his reputation among his community.

While the sisters are trying to survive and thrive by trying to live normal lives, one of the sisters is secretly a serial killer, who is murdering men in absolutely sick and twisted ways.

The two twists we get at the end of the book are so shockingly disturbing, and the ending almost feels like a gut punch to my soul. It was a realistic way to end the book, and even though I had a feeling who the killer was, the twist reveal still paid off!

4. Julie Tudor is Not a Psychopath by Jennifier Holdich

This book is told from the point of view of one of the most delusional serial killers in a horror story. A woman named Julie, who is now 49 years old, becomes obsessed with a young man in her workplace. She truly believes that he is in love with her, and every time he dates someone new, Julie thinks that he is just playing hard to get, and secretly hates his current girlfriends.

We also get her backstory when she was a young woman too, and it’s crazy to see how she developed this ‘love obsession’ at such a young age. While her backstory made me feel so bad for her when she was a kid, it was her choice to become a total delusional monster. She is willing to murder anyone in the name of love, and none of them ever show a shred of interest in her.

Only one guy actually shows his feelings for her, and it completely goes over her head. She misinterprets the one guy that adores her as just a friendship! The insanity of this woman is…pretty bad, but damn, her character is entertaining in the worst ways.

3. Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay

Even though this movie received a lot of mixed reviews when it came to the ending of the book, I believe this is one of the most bold horror novels ever written. The story literally focuses on a horror movie, that struggled to get through production in the 90s, due to a horrible accident.

We follow the point of view of a guy who became known as the Thin Kid, which was his slasher role in the horror movie. We learn that he is holding onto very disturbing memories of what took place behind the scenes of the original film. He starts to undergo a sort of slow burn mental breakdown, because of everything he sacrificed to get this movie made.

Once he hears about a possible reboot in the works years later, he decides to partake in the reboot, and his spiral into madness only gets worse from here. It’s the perfect psychological story that really makes you think on that disturbing ending, wondering if he mentally snapped or became an actual monster!

2. No Second Chances by Rio Youers

This book felt like I was watching a Quentin Tarantino film, and it’s rare for me to compare any kind of work to this director genius! We follow the story of a young girl named Kitty, who dreams of becoming a famous actress in the world of Hollywood, L.A. She decides to start working for a corrupt man that literally sees himself as an actual Viking, that proves to be the biggest mistake of her life.

She barely escapes from this mad villain, and is saved by an actor whose career went to crap, once he was accused of murdering his wife. His name is Luke Kingsley, and he doesn’t hesitate to help her, knowing the dangers that await both of them. Through Kitty’s dangerous endeavors, he learns a shocking truth: These people that Kitty worked for are connected to his wife’s disappearance.

The battle royale we get in the third act of the novel is completely BAT SHIT. I’m talking full-on fist fights, stabbings, horrific beat downs, brutal cuts from an actual axe, guns, car chases, a belt fight, and even a damn poisonous snake is thrown into the mix.

This book can only be described in one word: EPIC.

  1. Breathe In, Bleed Out by Brian McAuley

While No Second Chances deserves the title of best thriller book of 2025, I think Breathe In, Bleed Out deserves the title of best horror book of 2025. It’s an actual modern slasher, filled with so many twists and turns that you will never see coming. We follow the story of a young woman who is deeply traumatized over the death of her fiancé.

She decides to embark on a spiritual retreat with her friends, to help her begin the healing process of moving on. This decision leads down a path of chaos and death, as this group begins to be picked off one by one in some of the most creative deaths I have ever read in a horror book.

And trust me, the kills are GNARLY.

The twist reveal of the killer shocked me to my core, and I thought it was a genius reveal, one of the best that you will never see coming!

Stay tuned for another book recommendation list! I got another bag of books to read for you guys to check out!
