Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark Features a Terrifying Ending for the Villains
I have seen the original trilogy to the Indiana Jones franchise, and while I think all three are great in their own way, I think the first film has the darkest scene in the entire franchise. In the first entry, Indiana Jones takes on Nazi's, determined to retrieve the Lost Ark, that allegedly contains the ancient power of God, and whoever opens it, will pay the price.
The Nazi's don't take the warning seriously, and through sheer will and determination, they get their wish during the third act of the film. They capture Indiana Jones and his love interest, Marion, and tie them both up to a pole. The Nazi's open the ark, and are met with one of the most brutal ways to die in a movie.
Indiana immediately tells Marion to close her eyes, while everyone else around them is screaming in pure terror. The ark reveals a bunch of ancient spirits, who are killing the Nazi's one by one.
We then get two deaths that shocked me so much, and for a second, I thought I was watching a horror film. One of the Nazi generals that was a total piece of shit throughout the film, gets his face melted off, while the leader of the group gets his head blown off.
Apparently, the director did reveal that they had to find a different way to show these deaths on screen, because they would have gotten an R - rating. I think it had to do with the exploding head, which was shocking to learn, because that one dude who had his face MELTED OFF wasn't the main issue for the R - rating???
That melting face scene is nightmare fuel in my opinion, and the first time I saw it, it completely caught me off guard. I was already familiar with the dark stuff of the Indiana Jones franchise, after watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, but that death was INTENSE.
I can't imagine how many parents and their children freaked out during this scene. It's a great ending to the Nazi bastards, and damn, karma was definitely a bitch when it came to these assholes.
I also loved how unexpected the scene was in general. Again, even though I had seen some supernatural stuff in Temple of Doom, I wasn't expecting this level of insanity from the first entry. It was a normal action flick, until that very scene in the third act. I was honestly so terrified for both Indiana and Marion during this sequence, I can't imagine the horror that was coursing through them, knowing that they must never open their eyes.
I think the reason why all the Nazi's died, is because the Ark was never meant to be opened. Humans can't handle the power that is within the ark, and I guess it made sense why the villains all instantly died after opening up the artifact.
It felt so weird watching the very ending of the film, after Indiana had gotten back the ark, it was taken to a building full of other important artifacts, stored away in a wooden box. Can you imagine how Indiana must have felt after that experience, knowing that something so powerful was now going to be in a wooden box???
And what's crazier, is that everyone else that Indiana interacted with after the insane events, is that only he and Marion are aware of the Ark's power, even though THEY NEVER SAW WHAT WAS INSIDE.
Man, I love movies like this.
Even though Temple of Doom is my favorite film in the franchise, I think Raiders of the Lost Ark is a close second.
