Maria is the Saddest Character in Silent Hill History
I think that Maria has the saddest backstory in the entirety of the Silent Hill franchise. And yes, Angela from Silent Hill 2 is also beyond tragic, but what makes Maria even more heartbreaking, is that she actually doesn't exist.
She was born from a wish, from the mind of James Sunderland. She resembles his dead wife, Mary, and is there to only torment James, her only purpose from the town of Silent Hill. I don't blame Maria for her frustration in both the original and the remake when it comes to the ending of both games.
She was hoping for James to accept her, because she wanted to feel like she existed, like she was a person. But even though James does show some emotion for having to let her go, he knows that he must defeat her, in order for him to move on from his pain of murdering his wife.
Once James makes his decision, Maria realizes that her fate has been sealed. She transforms into a monster, to kill James, but even when she is a monster, she also fails to defeat him. In a last ditch effort, she tries to speak to him in Mary's voice, but James doesn't hesitate to put her down for good.
Even if James does accept Maria, it's still considered to be a bad ending for Maria.
If James decides to replace Maria with Mary, this will lead to the same fate for both James and Maria. She will get sick like Mary did, and James will be forced to deal with 3 years of hell again, most likely leading to the same conclusion of James killing Maria like he once did to his wife.
There is no happy ending for Maria.
The town of Silent Hill seals her fate through the hands of James, and no matter what decision he will make, Maria will always get the worse end of the stick.
Now that is one of the worse fates for a character in a video game.
