Smile 2 is a Shocking Triumph
After watching the first film, I knew I couldn't wait to watch the sequel. I was not expecting the ridiculous number of twists and turns, and somehow, the movie made it all work, and everything came together in a fantastic way.
The execution of the horror was perfect, this script needed a great director and a good crew of writers to pull off a horror concept this intense. I was vastly entertained throughout the movie until the very end, and I could not get over how BATSHIT this movie was.
Before I begin to talk about the sequel, there is one fate that I wasn't expecting to see. Right before we are introduced to our new main character, we see the fate of the cop from the first film, who had witnessed Rose's death. He attempts to kill someone to pass on the curse to someone else, but he screws everything up.
He kills two people by accident, and the wrong person is the one who gets the curse next. He tries to escape from a group of people who realize what the cop has done, but he is suddenly hit by a car, sealing his fate.
I was so disappointed with what happened to this dude.
Then we are introduced to our main character.
We follow the story of a pop star who is now targeted by the smile entity.
This is a damn genius plot. I can't believe no other horror film has done an idea like this. It's about damn time, and I'm so happy this film was able to pull off this kind of crazy plot.
A pop star named Skye is currently recovering from the death of her boyfriend, an actor named Paul. The two of them had gotten into a car accident in the past, and she had woken up to find him dead, completely traumatizing her. Now one year later, she is now about to do a new tour, ready to come back strong to her fans and the world.
However, there is one thing that continues to bother her. After the accident, she had received horrible scars from her accident. She is in need of any kind of medication to numb the pain, and she decides to go over to Lewis' place, who was the one who had been present during the cop's murder spree.
He now has the curse, and poor Skye witnesses his horrific death. She runs away from the scene, not wanting to be associated with his death in any way, worried that this could ruin her comeback. She begins to experience horrible visions of the smile entity, making her believe that she is going insane after Lewis' death.
Her own mother, who is her agent, and her crew are now suspecting that she is back to taking drugs, since she had gone through her own binge while she was dating Paul. Skye goes crazy over this accusation, and she turns to the one person that she had shoved away during her past episodes.
She reunites with her best friend, Gemma, who is willing to be there for her.
Gemma does not hesitate to go over to Skye's apartment, after she experiences a crazy number of sudden hallucinations at the hands of the smile entity. Skye is comforted by Gemma, and after she wakes up from a horrible nightmare of Gemma smiling at her, she realizes she is late for her rehearsal for her new tour.
Skye begins her rehearsal, but then sees her dead boyfriend appear in front of her. She freaks out, and falls to the ground, breaking her leg, like she once did in her past car accident. This all turns out to be another hallucination, and she storms off to her dressing room, where she learns that her assistant possibly trashed her room.
This is also not true, and the mystery of who trashed her room remained a confusing mystery to her mother who wonders what the hell is going on with her daughter. Skye attempts to get out of a speech she promised to do for someone, but her mother forces her to go, telling her she can't go back on her word.
This speech goes terribly wrong.
Skye is immediately manipulated by the entity on the spot. She is tricked into giving out a horrible speech, saying the name of her dead boyfriend out loud, and accidentally knocking over an older woman off the stage who tried to comfort Skye during her episode with the entity.
This causes a total calamity with the people around her, and Skye goes back home, trying to figure out what the hell is going on. She gets her answers from a mystery person had been texting her during the film, and she finally learns about the smile entity. She meets with a guy named Morris, an ER nurse, who tells her that she must die, and he will attempt to bring her back to life, to ensure the entity won't come after her.
Skye is obviously against this idea, and after she leaves the meeting after being recognized by her fans, things only get worse for Skye.
Skye is put through absolute hell by the entity for the rest of the film.
Skye goes through the worst of the worst at the hands of this monster. She gets possessed by this entity in her own apartment after she has a breakdown, and she wakes up in a recovery program. Her mother tells her that she must recover, or if she cancels the tour, her career will be over for good. Her mother is possessed out of nowhere during their argument, and the entity uses a piece of glass to attack her mother.
Skye goes into a panic and tries to run away from the scene, but realizes that she was the one who had stabbed her mother. The entity had used her body for its own gain, killing her own mother. Skye goes crazy, escapes from the program, and runs into Gemma, who offers to help her, no matter what. Skye is thankful for her help, but then she gets a call from Gemma.
She picks up the phone as she stars at her friend who is driving, and we get one of the best twists I did not see coming.
Gemma was never real. She had never reunited with the real Gemma. It was only the entity, who had taken on her form.
Skye freaks out over this, and is able to fight against the vision of her friend. She goes to Morris, and he takes her to the operating room, where he will put her to sleep and bring her back. Skye is instantly attacked by the entity, who has now taken on her form. Skye tries to end her own life to win against this creature, but then the creature drops a bombshell.
All of the insanity that Skye had experienced was never real. She had been getting ready for her new tour the entire time.
Everything that Skye had experienced after she had 'killed' her mother, was never real. It was all the entity's doing, making her believe that she was fighting back, and winning the fight. She wakes up on stage, watching the crowd cheer for her in shock as she spots her mother and assistant cheering her on from the stage.
Skye goes into a panic once she sees herself smiling. The smile entity reveals its true form, and takes over Skye's body. We cut to the crowd's point of view, as they watch Skye screaming and choking on stage. Skye then gets up, the crowd confused by her creepy smile.
We get a powerful off screen death sequence, as Skye beats herself with her own microphone. The crowd screams in horror as this death goes on for a long time.
The movie ends with Skye dead, her microphone now sticking out of her eye.
Plus, that entire crowd is now infected with the curse.
I can't believe how dark that ending was.
That entity is unbeatable, and now we are going to possibly get a third film, that will most likely feature the literal end of the world.
That is a bold way to end a horror film.
