Michael Corleone is a Tragic Villain
Michael's character really stayed with me after watching The Godfather. I wasn't expecting the film to focus on his character, and it was a huge surprise to see this innocent man who desperately wanted to escape from his family, become a monster. He is forced to return to the family when he learns of his father's attack from the other mob families, and he puts himself on the line, willing to do whatever it takes to protect his family.
Michael is portrayed as a cold and evil man, slowly changing into a man who looks 'dead inside.' His humanity completely leaves him, and only a husk of what he used to be is left behind. Protecting his own family destroyed him, and it's such a tragic downfall to watch.
I know that this film isn't exactly a horror film, but Michael's villain arc is what really made this film stand out to me. Watching him dispose of his enemies like it means nothing to him, is scary. And I felt so bad for his wife, who is forced to watch the man she used to love loose what once made him human.
Have you seen this movie? What do you think of Michael's character in The Godfather?
