The Final Episode of Supernatural Ended on a Powerful Note with Minor Disappointments

I finally finished Supernatural, and I can’t believe the amount of hate the final episode got from fans. I do understand that people were upset about the lack of some major characters from the finale, but in my opinion, I was only mad about one thing when it came to a specific character.

In the final episode, Sam and Dean Winchester on one final hunting case, that goes completely wrong. Dean is killed by a vampire, and gets impaled on a nail during the fight. Dean tells Sam to let him go, and he dies, as Sam breaks down in tears. Sam decides to abandon the hunting life, and raise a family, something he always wanted to do his whole life.

Dean goes to Heaven, where he reunites with old friends and family. He learns that Jack, a kid that was like a son to him, is now restoring a different kind of order to Earth, a peaceful one. Castiel, his best friend, is now helping Jack with his new task.

Sam grows old, dies of old age as his son, Dean, tells him it’s fine if he lets go. He reunites with Dean, and they both embrace, happy to see each other again. The series ends with Sam and Dean at peace.

In my opinion, I thought the finale was great.

Except for one thing that really pissed me off.

Dean’s death was so stupid.

Why did the writers think it was a good idea to kill off one of the most iconic and strong characters with a damn nail???

Why couldn’t they have had Dean get killed by a vampire, and have Sam hold his hand, as he dies in his arms?

I feel that the death of Dean would have been so much more powerful, knowing that Sam and Dean finally failed during a hunt, and it led to Dean’s death, who gets killed by a monster. I get that Covid did a number on the production of the final episode, but couldn’t the writers have given out a better ending for Dean?

This felt so rushed and plain dumb.

Dean is my personal favorite from the show, and I didn’t even cry over his death. I just watched him die, too upset with the way he died, to even acknowledge that Sam was losing him.

Sam’s ending made me emotional, because he got what he wanted in life. He got to live his life, and have a family. Watching him grow old, and have his son hold his hand, felt so powerful to me. Sam suffered the most out of all of the characters, and seeing him get that happy ending felt so rewarding.

It felt right, compared to that of Dean’s character.

I was kind of bummed that we never got a final scene with several main characters, but at least they were somewhat addressed.

Apparently, there were many unwritten scenes that were supposed to be in the final episode, but due to Covid or scheduling issues, these particular characters were addressed instead.

Eileen was the love interest of Sam in season 15, and she was supposed to return during the final episode, hinting that she was the wife of Sam. The writers did confirm that the faceless woman that Sam is married to was Eileen, but it does suck that we never got to see him in one more scene together.

Castiel was killed in episode 18 of the final season, after he had confessed his love for Dean. Whether it was family love or romantic, I feel that we really needed a final conversation between Dean and Castiel about that insane confession. I’m beyond curious to know what Dean would have told him, or would he have smiled at his best friend, who deeply loved him?

At least Castiel was addressed in some way, and watching Dean smile over his friend really made me wonder what he was thinking at that moment. How I would kill to know how he feels about his friend now!

Jack was made the new God in the show, and was applying a different sort of order to the world, and Castiel was said to be helping him. This made him happy to know that they were together, because Castiel always viewed Jack like a son. I would have loved another scene with all four of them together, talking and hanging out. Sam and Dean viewed these two like family, and I’m so curious to see what they would have discussed, now that they were all leading such different lives.

Even though I was a little disappointed over several storylines in the finale, I really did enjoy the way that the show ended. It felt raw and powerful, and it was also bittersweet in a way, knowing that our favorite characters were now following their own path.
