Why Josh's Disappearance from the Blair Witch Project Bothers Me So Much

While The Blair Witch Project has multiple theories or creepy mysteries that have plagued many horror fans, there is one mystery that scares me the most. Josh is one of the main characters in the film, who travels with the main three who get lost in the woods while filming a project for college.

Wanting to do a project on the Blair Witch goes horribly wrong, and Josh is the first one to either go missing, or be killed offscreen.

And while we don’t see what happens to Heather, or question why Mike was standing in the corner toward the end of the movie, we never get any sort of closure as to what really happened to Josh.

His character goes missing out of nowhere, during the second half of the film.

While the crew was hiding in the tent from another yet awful encounter with the Blair Witch, or whatever is in the woods, Josh is suddenly missing from the group. Mike and Heather wake up the next day, confused where the hell he is. They never find him, and the remaining duo becomes haunted by Josh’s disappearance.

The duo starts to hear Josh screaming in the woods during one night, as if he is being tortured. Heather does find a bundle of sticks mixed with a piece of fabric, and it’s filled with teeth and what appears to be a tongue. Of course, this also could not be Josh at all, and could instead be someone else that the witch had tortured before.

There are multiple theories as to what happened to him:

  1. Josh was 100% killed by the witch, and the Josh they find at the house toward the end of the film was the witch in disguise.

This theory is so creepy to imagine, but it does make an eerie sense. The witch’s power over the group was so strong, especially when it came to the scene when the crew kept going in circles, realizing that there was no escape.

I wouldn’t doubt that she had the power to mimic Josh’s voice, so I can see why this theory is pretty popular.

2. Josh was being controlled by the witch, forcing him to kill his two friends.

The main reason why I lean more toward this theory, is because of that messed up story that the town had told the crew while they were filming their project. A man named Rustin Parr had murdered seven children, and one of the methods was having one child stand in the corner as he killed the other one. Then he would grab the other child from the corner and continue the cycle.

I strongly believe that Josh was possessed, or being controlled in some way. My theory is that Josh attacked Mike at the house, and told him to stand in the corner. Then he brought Heather downstairs to the basement as she screamed in fear. The way that Heather’s camera moved so slowly as she walked downstairs made a lot of sense, because I think Josh was taking her down there, and she realized that Mike could not save her, leading to Heather full on panicking before she met an unknown fate.

All of these theories are so awful to imagine, and it’s so tragic what happened to the three of them. None of them deserved their fates, especially Josh, who was most likely given the worst fate out of the three of them.
