Final Destination: Bloodlines is a Perfect Return to the Franchise

I finally got to watch the newest installment in the Final Destination franchise, and I think the 6th film is tied with the second and fifth film of the franchise! The reboot film is a great addition to the franchise, and it’s awesome how over the top the kills are in this movie. The story now focusing on a family getting targeted by Death was a great idea for the franchise, and it feels so fresh, an original idea that the franchise wasn’t afraid to tackle head on!

I haven’t had this much fun with a horror movie in a while, and I haven’t felt so shocked by deaths this brutal since Final Destination 2! I deeply regret not watching this film in the theaters, because it was such a great experience, and it was sadly the last horror film with Tony Todd.

I’m happy to see another franchise get such a strong return, we need more great horror films like this!

The film begins with a bunch of brutal deaths.

We are now in back in time, (possibly the 1950s), with a young woman named Iris. She is dating a wonderful man named Paul, who appears to really love her. He takes her to a tall building known as Sky View, for a date. Iris is uncomfortable during this date, but not because of her lack of interest in her boyfriend. She is hiding a secret from him, and she is afraid to tell Paul. Once they arrive to Sky View, their date goes wrong in so many ways, but Iris and Paul still enjoy themselves.

During the date, Iris needs to go to the bathroom. She runs into a young woman, who is the singer in a band for the Sky View guests. Iris confesses that she is pregnant, and is scared to tell Paul. The woman assures her that if he loves her, he will accept both her and their future child. Iris is now feeling better after this conversation, and then Paul takes her to the roof of the building, where he proposes to her.

Iris is shocked, and then tells him about her pregnancy, leading to a happy conclusion for the couple. Paul is happy with the thought of starting a family with her, and Iris gets engaged. The couple dances together on the dance floor inside of Sky View, but then disaster strikes for the couple, including everyone in Sky View.

Everyone gets killed in brutal and over the top ways, because Death has come for all of them. Paul is one of the first ones to get killed in front of Iris, and after so many others are killed, Iris and a young boy are the only ones left. She tries her best to protect him, but then they both fall to their death from the falling building of Sky View, and Iris impales herself during the fall.

We cut to a screaming woman in the present day, startling everyone during a lecture in college. Her name is Stefani, and she is a college student, who has been haunted by the same nightmare of her grandmother, Iris, getting killed along with everyone else in Sky View.

Having enough of her nightmares, she decides to confront her family, asking about her grandmother. She learns that Iris was seen as a crazy lady, and the family wanted nothing to do with her. She had claimed that her entire family was going to die, and they were tired of her madness. She locked herself away in a building, to protect her family from becoming targets of Death.

Stefani goes to speak with Iris, and she learns that Death is coming for the whole family.

Stefani finds Iris staying inside of a cabin in the middle of nowhere, and Iris tells Stefani that nightmare was a vision that Iris had, of what was going to happen to everyone in Sky View. She was able to prevent so many deaths that night, but there was no point. Death came for everyone, and unfortunately killed the family members that these survivors had created over time.

Now it was the turn of Iris and her own family, and she gives Stefani a book of how to save the family. Stefani doesn’t believe her, and she makes the decision to let herself get killed by Death, to prove to her granddaughter that they are being hunted by Death itself. The family is attending her funeral, and then the family has a get together, after this loss. While Stefani is by herself in the family home, she realizes that Death is now coming for her other family members. She goes over to the party to warn them, only to witness her uncle get killed by a lawnmower.

The family attends another funeral, and then goes back home, each of them struggling to believe Stefani’s crazy theories about Death. She explains to them that Death is coming for them in a certain order, but no one believes her.

Death goes after Erik, the son of Stefani’s uncle. He gets a cop out death, and is revealed to still be alive. Stefani is confused why he didn’t get killed next, and then the family freaks out when Erik’s sister is the next one to die. The family later learns that Erik is not the biological son of his father, because his mother had cheated on her husband at some point during their marriage. After this unfortunate dilemma, Stefani realizes that Erik’s brother is next.

They learn about the young boy that Iris had tried to save in her vision, that turns out to be Tony Todd’s iconic character.

His name is William Bludworth, and he explains to the remaining family members that there is no way to beat Death, unless they either kill one family member to somehow bring back from the dead, or let Death take them. He tells the family that they should all embrace their last days on Earth, because they only get one chance at life.

(This monologue was improvised by Tony Todd I believe, and it made his final scene in the franchise so bittersweet).

The family panics over this realization, and while Stefani is trying to figure out what to do, Charlie, her brother, freaks out when Erik and his brother, Bobby, are gone. Erik is determined to save his brother’s life, by killing Bobby with his peanut allergy, to bring him back from the dead. They go to the hospital to ensure this plan works, but they are both brutally taken by Death.

These deaths were next level, and I think Erik’s death was the worst in the franchise. Death was planning to spare Erik, but after his interference to save his brother, Death DID NOT HOLD BACK on his death.

The remaining family members: Stefani, Charlie, and their mother are all feeling these losses, and come up with a plan to end Death’s plan for good.

They go back to Iris’ cabin, but Death has his own plan in store for the family.

The family battles Death head on at the cabin, and Stefani’s mother is killed during the ordeal. Stefani nearly dies from drowning, but Charlie brings her back, ending the cycle for good. Despite all of these heavy losses, the siblings are able to create their own happy ending, and go back home to their remaining family members.

Unfortunately, they learn that Stefani didn’t technically die, and Death comes after the siblings with a literal train wreck. They both get killed in the most unexpected way, with two logs falling on top of them, instantly killing them both.

The movie ends with their deaths, proving that it’s impossible to escape Death.

I couldn’t help but die of laughter in this scene, because I thought they were going to get killed differently, but I think Death just wanted to get their deaths over with. I love how creative and brutal the kills were in the film, and the impact of each family member’s death was felt throughout the movie, the actors conveyed their sadness perfectly!

It was also great to watch Tony Todd reprise his role for Final Destination one more time, and he was given an awesome send off for his iconic character.
