Michael was the Most Underwhelming Villain in Supernatural
Credit to ‘Supernatural’ Spoilers: Season 14 — Dean As Michael, Sam And Castiel
I remember how excited I was while watching the finale to season 13 of Supernatural. The thought of Dean Winchester finally getting possessed by a powerful entity to cause nothing but chaos sounded like such a fun idea. If Castiel and Sam Winchester were insane while possessed by the devil, why not have some fun with Dean next?
Michael ended up becoming the most annoying villain in the entire show for me as a viewer.
Michael had so much potential to be terrifying. He was already being hyped up to be a total menace, hinting at how powerful he is as an archangel, and I loved how he didn’t hesitate to kill so many people.
But Michael’s hype felt so lackluster compared to the other villains we got in the show. Hell, the Empty was even more threatening than him, and that’s because the Empty barely had any screentime on the show!
Michael barely accomplished anything before he was killed by the main crew.
- He was introduced from a literal multiverse, a world that had been destroyed, because Dean or Sam couldn’t be there to save the day. He was hyped up to be a HUGE threat, killing anyone who stood in his way.
- We did get some kills with Michael, but I felt like he didn’t kill that many people really. He did kill several people while possessing Dean, and he did murder the entire hunting group of the Winchesters, but that was it.
- He didn’t exactly kill big characters either, maybe Gabriel should count, but again, that was pretty much it.
- He kept on coming up multiple plans, and while they were world threatening plans, I felt like there was some hesitation on his end. Maybe the writers purposely made his character cocky, but shouldn’t he have learned his lesson when dealing with the Winchesters?
- He was defeated way too easily when he was able to possess Dean again during season 14.
Honestly, my theory is that the writers were in a huge hurry to get to the major villain for the final season, but Michael went from a threat to a joke.
This was one of the most disappointing villains for me as a fan, I was expecting so much destruction and death from this one dude.
At least he wasn’t worse than the Leviathans, who were the biggest joke of the entire show, so I can give him that.
It sucks that he was hyped so much too, because the anticipation of Dean getting possessed by Michael was an actual PROPHECY in the show. This had been hinted since the great old school seasons of the show, so of course fans were freaking out when his fate came true. This should have been impactful, because the way that he got possessed was so tragic.
Dean was forced to allow Michael to possess him, because Lucifer had kidnapped both Jack and Sam, preparing to kill both of them. Castiel witnesses his possession, and he is forced to fight the devil head on, with Michael within his body. Michael betrays Dean, and takes over his body anyway, and tells Sam and Jack: “Thanks for the suit.”
I LOVED that line, and it came off so eerie and threatening. (If only Michael’s terror could have continued strong from that moment).
Supernatural is truly an odd show. It’s so damn entertaining, but even I have to admit that the writers have had their share of screw ups when it came to the villains.
Michael started off so great, only to be seen as one of the most underwhelming villains in Supernatural history.
