Undertone is the Scariest Horror Movie of 2026

Undertone is now in my top three horror movies of 2026 so far. This is a unique horror film that deserves to be watched in the theater. I can’t believe I never thought of this idea before, using a podcast as a paranormal experience that builds up to utter chaos is a genius idea. The budget to this movie was only $500,000, and it’s already made $10 million in the box office!

Independent horror movies that become so successful like this is amazing and inspiring for any other director out there who desires to make a film like this! The camera work to this movie was awesome, the use of audio was creepy as hell, and only filming in one location made the atmosphere work so well!

We follow the story of a young woman named Evy, who is struggling to care for her mother, while filming a horror podcast.

A woman named Evy is living with her dying mother, taking care of her. She is obviously distressed by the situation, as she tries to keep it together. The only thing that is keeping her sane is recording a podcast with her friend, Justin, that is called The Undertone. Evy is the skeptic, while Justin is the believer of the paranormal, and they talk about creepy stories for the podcast. 

Justin discovers a strange story that was sent as an email to him, containing 10 audio files of a couple that allegedly experienced a demonic possession. They listen to several creepy audio files of the couple’s experience, and it sounds like something terrifying is taking place behind the scenes of this couple. Evy doesn’t believe what she is listening to, but she starts to feel off and tells Justin they need to stop recording for the night. 

Several days go by, and Evy is going through so much in her personal life. She learns that her mother is most likely going to die by a nurse, she finds out that she is pregnant by a guy that she doesn’t care to be with, and she comes to the conclusion that she doesn’t want to be a mother. 

To make matters worse, something strange is going on in her home. It appears after they had heard the first couple of audio files, Evy and Justin had unleashed something, that is now haunting both her and her mother. 

Evy doesn’t believe any of this, and continues the podcast with Justin, who is starting to grow a little more wary as they listen to the recordings. 

The duo learns that a demon who steals children was somehow involved with the weird audio files.

Once the duo learns that a demon is somehow involved in the odd audio files, Justin starts to get upset, not wanting to continue the audio recordings. Evy gets annoyed by her friend, wanting to keep going with listening to the files. By this point in the film, Evy has been through a lot in her home. 

She is now drinking, which is not good for her child, and she had continued to experience more and more strange hauntings with her mother that she refuses to believe or take seriously. Evy is also starting to draw these creepy images of a black figure with red, without even realizing what she is drawing. She convinces Justin that they must continue to listen to the files, and everything goes wrong during the second recorded episode. 

While they are recording the last two audio files, they also get phone calls, that lead to a disturbing conclusion about the couple. Justin and Evy learn that the couple was found dead in their home, and the woman was revealed to be pregnant. Justin freaks out over this, and desperately tries to convince Evy that they must stop the podcast. Evy once again refuses to comply, and this decision leads to Evy’s own demise. 

Evy finds herself under attack in her own home by an evil force.

Evy is suddenly hunted by a paranormal entity in her home, as Justin is yelling out for her, worried about her safety. The demon they had freed from the audio recordings is now after Evy, who is pregnant with her own child, now wanting to claim her as the next target. Evy is terrified during this whole encounter, as the demonic entity is taunting her. She learns that she had drawn the demon too, and she discovers more drawings of this same demon all over her house, as a terrifying chant of the demon’s name also follows her. 

She runs upstairs to check on her mother, and sees that she is out of bed. Her mother is standing in the closet, runs backwards back into the bedroom to attack Evy. All the lights break inside the house, leaving Evy in total darkness, as she is attacked offscreen. She screams in complete terror, and she then asks the demon to enter her, sealing her fate. 

The chants continue in the dark, ending the film. 

This movie was a wild ride for me, and the audio that you will hear in this film is so haunting and scary. I felt so sorry for Justin, who only wanted to save his friend from her fate. I think Justin was spared, but Evy obviously wasn’t. I was so mad that she never bothered to listen to her friend, because she could have saved herself, and spared her mother as well. 

Evy’s stupid choices led to her own death, and it’s horrifying to imagine what kind of fate she had suffered while being attacked by her own mother.
