I kept hearing about one specific episode from Twin Peaks, that was considered to be one of the best episodes ever written for a television show. I finally understand what fans meant by this, and episode 8 of season 3 of Twin Peaks, is one of the best episodes in television history.
Even though I didn't understand half of what was happening, the visuals, the insanity that was taking place created a fever dream that I will never forget.
Season 3 of Twin Peaks continues straight from the ending of season 2, where our main character named Dale Cooper, became trapped in a dimension known as the Black Lodge. His evil doppelganger took his place in the real world, and tormented so many people that Cooper was close to, along with murder. His evil doppelganger has been in the real world for 25 years, and someone finally got the jump on this monster.
He was working together with a man that he was aware had betrayed him, and he was about to kill him as punishment, only for this man to turn the tables on him. He is shot and killed, and before the man can leave, a bunch of spirits emerge from out of nowhere, and swarm the doppelganger's body.
He then returns from the dead, and the man who killed him is long gone, running away from fear.
We then finally get a backstory to how the Black Lodge came to be, and it was a fantastic ride from beginning to end. The evil entities were born from an explosion, a sign of evil that brought these monsters to live. The Giant, an entity from the Black Lodge, used his own powers to birth a young girl named Laura Palmer, who would be the first one to battle the Black Lodge.
After she is created, one entity decides to cause chaos on the streets. He kills random people, asking for a light, holding out a cigarette, but in reality, he is only there to cause carnage. He goes over to a radio show, and enters the building. He kills the first woman that he stumbles across, and then slowly tortures the radio host, as he gives out a creepy speech to people through the microphone, repeating a phrase over and over.
People listening to the radio show start to pass out, and one particular girl passes out on her bed. A disgusting bug that had hatched earlier in the episode goes over to her open window, and enters her mouth. Once this act is done, the entity stops repeating his phrase, and finishes off the radio host. He leaves the building, his task now done.
This episode left my head spinning, in the best way. We got so many answers, and I was still left confused and terrified.
That is why I love David Lynch. He did something that Hollywood is afraid to do, by creating something in his own image, a horror masterpiece that has become a cult classic.
I had started watching his work after his passing, and man, I believe that David Lynch is one of the best horror masters in the world.
I will miss this mastermind, Lynch was truly a master of his craft, and I think Twin Peaks is the best show ever made.
