Inspector Chester Campbell is One of the Most Despicable Villains in Television

Inspector Chester Campell is one of the first villains in Peaky Blinders that is introduced early in the show. His character is at first seen as a ‘hero’ type, when he is determined to take down the Peaky Blinders. He hires a young woman named Grace, to infiltrate the gang, and gain information to take down the mafia family for good.

However, we begin to see a much darker side of the Inspector, showing the viewers that perhaps the Peaky Blinders really aren’t a big deal compared to this monster.

He is revealed to be a crooked cop, that delights in having power for others. He falls in love with Grace, and becomes extremely angry and jealous when he learns that she is falling love with Thomas Shelby, the leader of the Peaky Blinders. He attempts to murder her when he realizes that she will never love him, and she retaliates, shooting him before he can kill her.

Campbell recovers from his injury, and is now more than determined to kill Thomas Shelby. He blames him for Grace not wanting to be with him, and this brutal rejection pushes him over the edge. He later inflicts one of the worst crimes on one of the Shelby family members, as a sort of sick revenge for always being one step ahead of him.

Polly Gray, a woman that is considered to be almost like a mother figure to the family members of the Peaky Blinders, is desperate to break her son out of jail. She goes to Campbell, wanting to do whatever it takes to save her son. He takes advantage of her, leaving her deeply traumatized. The Shelby family is outraged over this vile action committed against their mother figure, and now the family is seeking his death.

Polly is the one who confronts him later, during a racing event in the city. Campbell makes the mistake of mocking her, and Polly kills him, as revenge for what he did to her. What was ironic about his death, was that the woman that he loved was literally right there, attending the event. Grace was at the racing course, waiting for Thomas Shelby to return to her, after finding out that she was pregnant with his child.

Thomas also decided to let the Inspector know that he was secretly dating Grace, to really rub it in his face before his death.

I was thrilled when the Inspector was killed. It’s so rare for me to hate villains like this, but damn, this man was all kinds of evil. I couldn’t stand how he used his authoritative power over others to stay in power, and sure, the Peaky Blinders were still considered bad guys, but compared to the Inspector, they were the true heroes compared to this bastard.

I also couldn’t stand how he viewed women in the show. Grace became a very creepy obsession for him, and I was so glad she was able to get away from him before he killed her. The mindset of ‘if I can’t have you, then nobody can,’ is so stupid. Dude was willing to murder this poor young woman to prevent Thomas Shelby from having her.

And what he later did to Polly was so messed up. I did not expect that scene to take place, and apparently, even the writers and the Sam Neill himself who played the Inspector believed that was the darkest scene in the whole show.

While there are so many vile villains in this whole show, I think the Inspector was definitely the worst one.

I literally cheered when this dude kicked the bucket.
