'Rick and Ruby' is a Unique Vampire Tale that Needs its Own Movie

Rick and Ruby is a short horror film that was released back in 2019, that follows the story of a young woman that is dragging a heavy suitcase. She comes across a bar, filled with dangerous men. They attempt to harm her, but she is luckily saved by the strange suitcase.

That happens to be carrying a person inside.

It's a young guy, named Rick.

He is happy to get out of the suitcase, and smokes a cigarette, as he tells the men his life story. It appears that Rick is not human anymore, and must avoid the sun at all costs. The men don't believe him, and even get creeped out by him, when Rich starts to hit on one of the men. They shoot him, and then Rick suddenly stands back up, acting like he never got shot.

The men freak out over this realization, and the duo attack the men.

Ruby gets the upper hand with a stick that is used for pool, beating one of the men with the stick. Rick get full on feral, using his supernatural abilities to take down the men. We get an insane moment of awesome practical effects, as Rick literally rips off one of the men's heads.

He then proceeds to greedily slurp up the blood shooting out of the neck, as Ruby wins her own fight. She goes over to Rick, who is nonchalantly slipping on blood, and grabbing a leftover pool stick, that contains bits of blood and meat from one of the men. He eats the remains from the stick, as Ruby takes out a map. She tells Rick that the guy who turned Rick into a vampire is now close to them, and they need to go a certain route to get to him.

The film ends with the duo staring at the carnage of the bar, as they prepare for the next part of their journey.

This short left me with so many questions, and even though the villains in this short were overly cartoonish when it came to the dialogue, I did appreciate the film, for its campy comedy and the extreme practical gore.

The guy who played Rick is genuinely a good actor; I'm so surprised I haven't seen this guy in other horror projects.

I feel that these kind of short films are so much more better than most of the Hollywood movies we get nowadays. I'm glad for the great horror movies we are getting in 2026, we are seriously getting great independent horror films this year, but when it comes to Hollywood or the other genres, I feel that we are really needing more cool ideas like this.

'Rick and Ruby' needs to become a full-length feature film. I have so many questions with why Rick was picked to become a vampire, by this unknown vampire. Why were Rick and Ruby so hellbent on finding the guy? From the implications of the short, I think they were hoping for a cure for Rick somehow. And how did Ruby get involved in Rick's mess?

From the banter we get between the two of them, they sound like really good friends, who genuinely care about each other. My guess is that they are like family, and I think Ruby is willing to do whatever it takes to help Rick.

This horror short film is only thirteen minutes long, and I can't believe how much story was able to fit into this one scene. These creators and actors deserve their own horror film, possibly in a theater, hopefully.

If Deathstalker, an independent horror film with great practical effects was able to get a cult following online, then I'm sure that Rick and Ruby stands a chance within the film industry of horror!

Horror shorts like this deserve their own movie!
