Benjamin Horne was Surprisingly Given a Proper Character Arc for the Final Season of Twin Peaks
Benjamin Horne was one of the biggest scumbags from the old seasons of Twin Peaks. He was the father of Audrey Horne, who was seen as a powerful businessman in Twin Peaks. He owned a hotel, and used his power and wealth to get what he wanted. He hired people to murder for him, slept with a lot of women in Twin Peaks, had a secret daughter who was actually Donna Hayward, and his poor daughter was the one who found out a of dark truths about her father when she had snuck in a secret resort to help Dale Cooper with Laura Palmer's case.
He also had slept with Laura Palmer, who was literally his daughter's age...and this was a huge problematic reveal in the show.
Audrey was obviously pissed off at her father over all of these shocking truths, and Horne began to go through a spiral of madness during his journey in season 2. Once he finally went through his 'healing process,' he vowed to change for his daughter.
In Twin Peaks: The Return, we see this change within Benjamin Horne. He is no longer a sleazebag, and he actually rejects a married woman who worked for him, who wanted to sleep with him to escape from what she was going through in her tough marriage. He did divorce his wife and she took Johnny with him, and from the looks of it, they were definitely not on good terms. He refused to give her money, and even refused to give money to Richard Horne, who was revealed to the son of Audrey Horne. He appeared to hold a lot of sadness and pity for his grandson, which really surprised me.
The old version of his character would have probably supported him or allowed him to work by his side, but the changed Horne was the complete opposite of that. He literally told the sheriff that he was willing to throw Richard under the bus to have him arrested, once he heard that his own grandson had murdered a kid, and attempted to murder another woman who had witnessed him.
I found myself feeling sorry for Benjamin in the final season, because while he did change for the better, he didn't have his family in his life anymore. Due to all of his mistakes, he was alone, and from the sound of it, Benjamin had lost all contact with Audrey, who had meant the world to him in the old seasons.
Benjamin was now a good man in the final season, but he unfortunately waited too long to change for the better.
