Bobby Briggs Had the Best Character Arc in Twin Peaks The Return
Out of all the characters in Twin Peaks, I was not expecting Bobby Briggs to have one of the few happiest endings in the reboot of season three. Bobby Briggs was so annoying back in the old seasons, because he was one of those crazy teenagers that did so much stupid stuff, including lashing out at people whenever he lost his temper. Understandably, he was distraught over losing Laura Palmer, but compared to everyone else, Bobby really struggled to adjust after her death.
However, he had one thing that was helping him heal. His father, Major Briggs, explained to him that he had seen Bobby in the future, and he was going to be alright. This turned out to be shockingly true, when we see Bobby years later, now one of the sheriffs working in the police department of Twin Peaks.
The new Bobby was calm, kind, mature, and extremely patient. He even had a daughter with Shelley, a marriage that did not work out, but at least there appeared to be a very good relationship between the three of them. His willingness to help people also shocked me, like during that one scene where a gun went off in the cafe while he was speaking with his family, and he immediately went outside to investigate.
How he was able to handle the supernatural elements that followed was impressive, but I think that had to the do with Major Briggs. He was always talking about his connection with a place called The White Lodge, that was considered to be a good place where people would go after passing an impossible test within the Black Lodge, considered to be the most dangerous supernatural realm within the series. Perhaps his connection with the White Lodge helped Bobby in some way, leading to his redemption arc into a good citizen who was willing to protect people.
Major Briggs even went missing shortly after interacting with an evil entity known as Mr. C, who was the doppelganger of the main character, Dale Cooper. I believe that Bobby was able to stay strong after his father's disappearance, because his good heart continued to help Bobby move on than stay trapped in the past. Bobby instead carried the memories of the past with him, but he found a way to keep Laura alive than remain angry over her death.
In perhaps one of the most significant moments of season three, the police department go through Laura's old case file to look for clues as to what happened to Dale Cooper. A picture of Laura was displayed, and when Bobby saw it, he burst into tears, but there didn't appear to be any anger. He seemed so sad over seeing her picture again, and my heart broke for Bobby, as the rest of the police department was asking if Bobby was alright.
That single moment proved to me that Bobby was now a changed man, and I was so happy to see him move on from his difficult past.
Bobby's character arc in The Return was awesome, and out of the all the characters, I think Bobby truly did deserve his happy ending.
