Diane Has One of the Most Tragic Stories in Twin Peaks

Diane was given one of the saddest stories among the characters of Twin Peaks. Diane was only a background character in the old seasons of Twin Peaks. It was heavily implied that Dale Cooper shared a powerful bond with her, since he always addressed Diane whenever he would record his cases on a tape recorder. Diane is finally introduced in Twin Peaks: The Return, but right off the bat, Diane doesn't seem like herself. The way that Cooper would always speak to her on the tape recorder in such a bubbly manner appeared to hint the two of them were quite close, but Diane is now a miserable person in the final season.

This sudden personality change is eventually addressed, when Diane interacts with Cooper's evil doppelganger for the first time. The FBI learns that Diane and Mr. C had met once, many years ago, but the implications of the meeting appeared to come off sinister.

Diane tells the real story to the FBI much later in the final season, revealing that she had been tortured by Mr. C, and she realized it was never Cooper, but his doppelganger, that had ruined her life. Upon this realization, Diane tells the FBI that she is not herself, and attempts to shoot some of the FBI agents. They shoot her first, and Diane finds out on her own, that she is a doppelganger herself, and finds herself back in the Red Room. Mr. C had created Diane's doppelganger, for his own purposes on Earth.

The real Diane had been trapped in the Red Room like Dale Cooper, and she had been transformed into another person, that Cooper had interacted with while he found himself in the Black Lodge. Once Mr. C is defeated, and Cooper interacts with this stranger he had met, the woman transforms into the real Diane. Cooper and Diane reunite, and they rejoice, happy to be together again.

Unfortunately, this happiness doesn't last.

Diane and Cooper both decide to stay together in the alternate timeline to save Laura Palmer, but in the end, Diane couldn't stay with him. I believe because of the trauma she had been through with being trapped in the Red Room, due to Mr. C, she wasn't able to stay with Cooper. She leaves him behind in the hotel, and she writes him a note, saying goodbye.

I felt so sorry for Diane, and I feel that she got a bad ending, similar to Cooper. I'm curious if she had vanished or been sent back to the Red Room like Cooper after the ending, but man, Diane never deserved any of what she had gone through.

Just because of her connection to Dale Cooper, she suffered at the hands of the Black Lodge. It was so tragic that Cooper's love for her led to such an awful fate, all because his heart was always set in the right place for her, and that was what led to her downfall.
