Why I'm Glad Donna Never Returned to Twin Peaks: The Return

Donna was the most annoying character in the original seasons of Twin Peaks. Donna Hayward was a high school student who shared a strong bond with Laura Palmer, and her boyfriend, James. Donna was stuck in a love triangle between James and Laura, and even after Laura's death, she was still stuck in a love triangle with James, when Laura's look alike cousin was introduced within the show.

Donna was the type of character who always wanted to take action, no matter the consequences. She got other people involved in her schemes, to figure out who had killed Laura. I understand that she was angry over the death of her best friend, but the fact that she would pull both James and Madeline in her schemes to solve Laura's murder pissed me off. She constantly put her friends in the worst situations and was sort of involved in the death of one guy named Harold Smith, who was close with Laura.

Donna really felt like she had that 'main character energy,' and I got so fed up with her character fast. Audrey also carried that same energy too, but at least Audrey was brutally honest and wasn't afraid to be her weird self. And sure, she did stupid things, but at least she never got her friends involved in her dangerous plans.

I'm glad that Donna never returned to the final season, because I felt that it wouldn't have made any sense for her character to come back. Toward the end of season 2, it was very clear that Donna was done with Twin Peaks, after James left her, and once she found out that her real father was Audrey's father.

It was good to see James on his own for once in the final season, and sure, he was still making some dumb decisions in season 3, but at least he didn't have anyone to hold him back.

I felt that James deserved a far better storyline in the old Twin Peaks, and I'm glad that he eventually left Donna, because man, I felt that her character was just plain stupid. And yes, she was intentionally written that way for the show, but jeez, she caused so many problems for so many people. Even Dale Cooper got after in one scene in the old seasons, telling her to stop throwing herself into the investigation of Laura Palmer.

Personally, I think bringing Donna back would have been an odd choice for the return of Twin Peaks, and while I'm sure that David Lynch could have written a great story for her, I think Donna's character arc was done after season 2.
